Madrid with Kids Aged 8-12

Museo Lázaro Galdiano is the private collection of a Madrid publisher, shown in his own palace on Calle Serrano: paintings, armor, jewels, ivories and clocks. The garden hosts outdoor sculpture shows. Family walks through the collection run on the third Saturday of the month, and workshops run through the year.

On a hillside in Parque Forestal de Valdebebas, three long metal slides zigzag down between planted slopes. Kids climb back up by a red rope net, ropes and a row of wooden stumps, then go again. A 50 m double zip line faces the slides, and nearby water play has Archimedes screws, water wheels and gated channels to redirect, with sand for smaller kids.

A morning in the woods of the Sierra Norte with a mycologist. It starts with a short talk on how to tell mushrooms apart and which ones to be careful with. Then the group walks the forest looking for fungi, and ends by sorting and naming what it found.

Run by the Asociación de Amigos de la Casa de Campo. Suits curious kids who are happy on a long walk.

The museum inside Spain's National Library shows rare books, manuscripts, maps and prints in the library's grand building on Paseo de Recoletos. Old volumes and illustrated pages make it a quiet, short visit for curious readers, and the library runs children's workshops.

An arboretum on the slopes of Monte Abantos, with more than 200 species of trees and shrubs from every corner of Spain. Paths and viewpoints wind through it, past a charcoal kiln, resin-tapping trees, beehives and a trap for pine processionary caterpillars. In fall many of the trees change color. The paths are steep in places, so it suits kids happy to climb.

This year's Day of the Dead altar at Casa de México honors the composer Agustín Lara, shown seated at his piano. The scene is a mountain cemetery in Michoacán on the night families visit their dead, with candles, orange marigolds, copal, food, music and monarch butterflies. Skeleton figures keep it colorful more than spooky, and it suits kids who like to look closely at small details.

Circo Atayde is a Mexican family circus, 138 years old and now run by its fourth and fifth generations. This is its first time in Europe. The show is a classic ring circus: high-flying acrobatics, a lovable clown and other circus acts, all played live by an orchestra instead of a recorded soundtrack. Best for kids who can sit through a long show.

Guided walks on the Segovia side of the Sierra de Guadarrama National Park, around the pine forests and rivers of Valsaín. Saturday walks go with a nature guide, and some Sundays bring themed outings led by specialists, from old drove roads to river wildlife.

Groups are small. Routes range from easy riverside strolls to longer hikes, so pick by distance and difficulty.

The yearly pumpkin party at El Huerto del Retiro, the city's environmental education center and garden inside Retiro Park. Local growers sell food from their stalls, a singer plays a short set, and the municipal nursery hands out free plants. Older kids can join a booked workshop making decorative pumpkins from old fabric, and a contest crowns the biggest and rarest pumpkins of the year.

For Halloween week, the Museo de Cera adds giant gargoyles, a Day of the Dead altar, a spooky cemetery and a real coffin for photos, and staff hand out trick-or-treat candy at times through the day. The Wax Horror Experience is a separate, much scarier route with live actors and intense effects. On a few set days, kids can also join a potion workshop and get their faces painted.

Micropolix is a kid-sized city in San Sebastián de los Reyes where children try out grown-up jobs. For Halloween the streets are decorated, there is Halloween face painting, and the cruise ship turns into a haunted passage with mild scares, on top of the usual job activities. It suits kids who want a bit of spooky without a proper fright.

Every Christmas, Spain stops to watch the lottery draw for El Gordo. Pupils from the San Ildefonso school pull wooden balls from two giant drums and sing each number and prize in a chant every Spaniard knows.

The draw has been held at Teatro Real since 2012, and anyone can watch from the hall for free. It suits school-age kids who like a big live moment.

Spain rings in the New Year by eating 12 grapes, one per chime of the clock on the Real Casa de Correos. The night before, thousands rehearse under the same clock with 12 gummy candies instead: the Preuvas.

It is the kid-friendlier of the two nights, with sweets instead of grapes, but it is still a packed square at midnight. Best for older kids who can stay up.

A few days a year, Spain's parliament lets the public in for free. Visitors climb the steps between the bronze lions and follow a set route: an original copy of the 1812 Constitution, the domed Hall of Lost Steps, then the Hemicycle, where the 350 deputies debate and vote.

It suits school-age kids who have heard of parliament and want to see where it happens.

Circo Price en Navidad has been Madrid's Christmas circus tradition since 2006. Each year the theater stages a new production made just for the season, with acrobats, clowns and circus artists performing in the round. Kids who have never seen circus up close will find it easy to follow.

Mi Jardín Ibérico is an eco garden and plant nursery on the edge of San Agustín del Guadalix that runs a Halloween pumpkin carving workshop most falls. Families get a pumpkin, carving tools and face templates, carve it together and take it home. Between turns there are garden paths to wander and a hen house to visit.

Chamberí is a Metro station from Madrid's first line, closed in 1966 when trains got longer, and left almost untouched. The platforms still show their original tiled walls and vintage advertising posters from the 1920s to the 1960s, designed by architect Antonio Palacios. A 30 to 40 minute guided visit walks you through the tunnel and platforms.

A central cinema in the Plaza de los Cubos complex, a short walk from Plaza de España, that shows most of its films in original version with Spanish subtitles. The program leans toward independent and festival titles, so family releases are fewer than at a multiplex, but undubbed animated and teen films turn up each week.

The palace gardens step down in three terraces with fountains, sculptures and a labyrinth, plus a lake with a working water wheel and a 16-sided bird house. Ventura Rodríguez designed the neoclassical palace in the 1760s. Kids can roam the terraces and orchards on their own time while adults take in the views.

San Lorenzo de El Escorial is a mountain town built around Felipe II's vast 16th-century monastery and palace, where the kings of Spain are buried. Families can solve the free En Busca del Templo de Salomón phone gymkhana, 14 riddles over 2 km, then walk out through the royal La Herrería forest to the Silla de Felipe II, a rock seat with the whole monastery spread out below.

El Capricho is a duchess's 18th-century garden full of follies: a laurel hedge maze, a small brick fort, a boathouse on a winding canal, temples and fountains. Kids hunt for black swans, ducks and red squirrels and try to get lost in the maze. It is a walking garden, so balls, bikes, scooters, picnics and dogs stay outside.

Eight centuries of Spanish seafaring fill the galleries inside the Navy headquarters: rooms of detailed ship models from galleons to steamships, naval weapons, navigation instruments and explorers' maps. The star piece is Juan de la Cosa's chart from 1500, the oldest surviving map to show the Americas. Storytelling sessions, theatrical tours with costumed historical figures and ship-model workshops run for families through the year.

A vertical garden of more than 15,000 plants climbs the wall beside this cultural center, and kids can learn how it stays alive. Inside, rotating art, science and design exhibitions share the building with programs made for families: hands-on workshops, from building a mini vertical garden to light and color experiments, plus Pequeños Cinéfilos film screenings and an immersive nature show.

A historic train that runs from the Railway Museum to Aranjuez, about an hour each way. Kids ride in wooden carriages built between 1914 and 1930, with slatted benches and open balconies at each end, while crew in early-1900s costume check tickets.

The middle of the day is free time in Aranjuez, with royal gardens, the palace and the river. On the ride home, staff hand out Aranjuez strawberries.

The largest royal palace in Western Europe has more than 3,000 rooms, and the self-guided route through the state halls takes in the grand staircase, the Throne Room, the Gasparini Room, the gala dining room and the Royal Chapel. Across the Plaza de la Armería courtyard, the Royal Armory holds the personal armor of Emperor Charles V and King Philip II, with knights mounted on armored horses.

A city built to kid scale, 12,000 m² under one roof, where children work more than 30 real jobs: firefighter, vet, pilot, journalist, police officer. Some jobs pay a wage in Eurix, the city's own currency, and others cost Eurix, so kids decide how to earn and spend it. Parents stroll the streets, sit in the café or join adult activities while kids work.

Exhibitions on technology, art, and science inside the Telefónica building on Gran Vía, the city's first skyscraper. The permanent show, Exponencial, follows the leap from the first telephones to mobile phones, the internet, and AI. Temporary shows change through the year, and Sunday family workshops tie into them.

The national museum of the Americas, with pre-Columbian gold, Inca textiles, and a 2,000-year-old Paracas mummy bundle from Peru, still wearing its gold nose ornament and collar. Rooms move through explorers' maps, daily life, religion, and writing. Look for the Tro-Cortesiano Codex, a painted Maya book, and the gold of the Quimbaya Treasure.

A free-roam virtual reality hall where up to 12 players share one game, walking freely with no cables or backpacks. Players wear HTC Vive Focus 3 headsets with gaming headphones and mics. Each visit lasts 45 minutes, about 30 of them in the game. Kids from 8 start with polar and wildlife adventures; from 10 they can hunt ghosts, chase dragons and play laser battles.

A 450-meter indoor kart track on two levels, with bridges, a banked curve, a 6-meter-wide racing line and LED safety signals. Kids drive junior karts in 10-minute sessions, with every lap timed live on the scoreboard and saved in the track's app. Adults race the same circuit in their own sessions, and the track also runs driving courses and championships.

The city's permanent circus is built around a true round ring, 12.9 meters across, with about 1,700 seats circling it, so kids watch acrobats, aerial acts and clowns from close up. The program changes through the year: family circus, touring troupes, magicians and concerts, plus a big Christmas circus.

Between shows it runs kids' programs, from a clown-led tour of the building to shadow-theater workshops and Saturday circus classes.

Tejera Negra is a beech forest in the Sierra Norte de Guadalajara, where the leaves turn gold, orange and red in fall. The long Senda del Robledal starts at the visitor center. The shorter Senda de Carretas starts at an inner parking lot and winds through the beeches past a meadow that makes a good rest stop.

It suits kids who can hike several kilometers on rough ground.

For Halloween, Parque de Atracciones de Madrid runs a gentle program for younger kids and a scary one for teens and adults. Kids walk through three haunted passages with laughs and small scares, including the new Un Laboratorio Muy Loco, and catch Nickelodeon shows and parades. The four terror passages and the Área 51 scare zone are built to frighten. Families with small kids can stick to the first half.

Parque Warner's Halloween season has a family side and a scary side. Younger kids get the new ACME Factory, a hands-on mission to help Wile E. Coyote find a lost candy recipe, plus Looney Tunes parades and a Día de los Muertos show. The four terror passages, based on films like IT and The Nun, are for older kids. Halloween Scary Nights are separate late-night events.

Hábitat Madrid is the city's season of nature activities, run from environmental centers in three big parks. Kids plant in a family vegetable garden, track animal prints, build bird feeders and join bird walks, all led by environmental educators. Each session has a set age range and needs booking, so it suits families who plan a few weeks ahead.

More than 40 stalls of toys old and new: Playmobil, LEGO, Star Wars figures, Scalextric, model trains, Nancy dolls and the Madelman and Geyperman figures Spanish parents grew up with.

Most buyers are collectors, so it suits a kid with a favorite set or saga in mind, or a parent hunting a childhood toy. Kids who are not into toys will tire fast.

A family workshop at Casa de México where kids and parents make papel picado, the cut-paper banners that hang at every Mexican fiesta, plus paper versions of the orange marigolds that cover Day of the Dead altars. You hear how families mark the day across Mexico, then take the decorations home for your own altar. Led by paper artists Diana Ramírez and Andrea Guerrero.

La Casa del Fantasma is a Halloween day out at the Eurofiestas complex, built around a family lunch with a comic show, games and costume contests. After lunch comes a spooky gymkhana with sack races and tug-of-war, then covered inflatables. At the end, the Mansión Dam terror passage opens next to an 80s and 90s disco. The organizer says the main show is meant to be fun, not frightening.

Madrid's day for its patron saint, the Virgin of La Almudena. After an open-air mass beside the cathedral, her statue is carried through the old center to Plaza Mayor and back. It is also the season for the corona de la Almudena, a ring-shaped pastry that bakeries all over the city sell for the occasion. Best for kids who like a procession and a treat after.

Each November the Sociedad Micológica de Madrid lays out wild mushrooms its members have gathered, each one labeled edible, toxic or of no interest. It's a hands-off way for kids to learn which mushrooms not to touch on a forest walk. Kids can also enter a drawing contest, sketching a mushroom from a slide while parents look around.

The children's edition of Madrid's famous New Year's Eve race. Kids get a bib and run one to three laps of the athletics track inside Estadio Vallehermoso, grouped by age, with a new wave leaving every few minutes.

For many it is a first real race, finish line included. The small entry fee goes to the Gasol Foundation and Fundación A LA PAR.

La Calbotada is Rozas de Puerto Real's chestnut festival, when the town roasts and tastes chestnuts from its own groves. They are the biggest chestnut woods in the Madrid region, with some trees over a century old. It is a village tradition rather than a big fair, so it suits families who will pair it with an autumn walk in the woods or around the Morales reservoir.

Madrid's main square fills with red wooden stalls every Christmas, a market that has run for more than a century. Families come for nativity figures, moss and tiny accessories for their home belén, plus ornaments and toys. Kids head straight for the joke-shop stalls, piled with wigs, masks and gag gifts. Just off the square, a vintage carousel turns in Plaza de Santa Cruz.

A huge nativity scene inside the Real Casa de Correos, built every year by Madrid's volunteer nativity makers. Last year's walk-around version held about 500 figures under a ceiling of starry lights, and choirs sang live through December. Kids lean over the rails to spot scenes from shepherds to the Three Kings' parade.

The Warner Bros. theme park south of the city decks its streets with lights, trees and snow for Christmas. Looney Tunes characters turn up in holiday outfits, there are Christmas shows and street acts through the day, and a parade aimed at small kids. Bring the letter for Santa and the Three Kings. The regular rides stay open, so older kids still get their coasters.

City Hall turns its own building into a Christmas stop. Under the glass roof of the Galería de Cristal there's an ice rink, with skates in the ticket and walkers for kids finding their feet. In the old post office hall next door, the city's big nativity runs from the cave to a waterfall and lake. Both are indoors, so it holds up on a cold or rainy day.

Millions of LED lights turn streets, plazas and buildings across Madrid into one big Christmas trail. Designer displays, giant fir trees, glowing nativity scenes and bulbs drawn by first and second graders in a school contest give kids plenty to hunt for. Gran Vía, Calle Alcalá and Plaza Mayor are the classics.

Belenes, the nativity scenes Spanish families build every Christmas, turn up all over the city in museums, palaces, convents and public buildings. The big ones are whole miniature towns, with rivers, mills and market stalls around the stable and hundreds of handmade figures. Kids get absorbed hunting for small scenes, like the washerwoman at the river. One or two in an afternoon is plenty.

The city's classic amusement park, in the Casa de Campo, dresses up for Christmas. Kids can hand their letters to Santa and, after Christmas Day, to the Three Kings. Winterland, a themed world of ice, light and fantasy creatures, reopens, the Gran Teatro Auditorio puts on holiday shows, and there's a tree lighting. The regular rides stay open too, from Nickelodeon Land for small kids to Abismo for teens.

Each fall Mercado de Prosperidad, a neighborhood food market, dresses up for Mexico's Day of the Dead with papel picado, an altar, mariachis and a photocall. Last year the stalls also ran a tapa-and-drink route, and the nights brought a DJ and a Ramones tribute band. Daytime is the gentler slot for kids; late evenings lean toward a grown-up party.

The city bus museum sits inside the working EMT depot in Fuencarral. More than 40 historic buses fill a 1950s industrial hall, from early models to double-deckers, the city's first articulated bus and a microbus, next to recent ones. It is a big, easy-to-read collection for kids who love vehicles.

A free winter recreation area inside Sierra de Guadarrama National Park, at 1,830 meters beside the old Cotos ski area. It has two marked sledding zones, one only for children up to 7, plus open snow for snowball fights. Plastic sleds are banned. The cross-country ski track beside it is closed to sleds, walkers and dogs.

A trampoline park inside the Heron City leisure complex with nine zones, including a foam pit, airbag jump, basketball slam lanes, a gladiator duel and a freestyle jump area. Sessions are timed. Children under five need an adult with them. A cafeteria is on site, and the park also runs a jumping academy for regular classes.

A nine-screen cinema on Calle del Doctor Cortezo, a few minutes from Puerta del Sol, that has built its name on original-version screenings with Spanish subtitles. Family and animated releases usually play in both dubbed and original versions, so English-speaking kids can watch undubbed. Every showtime on the website states its version.

Dehesa Boyal is a 232-hectare holm oak woodland on the edge of Sanse, part of the Alto Manzanares regional park. Sandy and dirt tracks wind through open oak country, marked in kilometers for walking, running and cycling. A children's leisure park sits beside the municipal sports complex.

A 150-hectare forest park on Pozuelo's edge, replanted in the early 1990s with oaks, pines and riverside trees. Two 7,000 square meter lakes sit beside four marked paths, including a 2 km oak trail and two sensory trails. An environmental education center runs programs through the year.

A 120-hectare green space in Las Rozas, planted with pine groves between the A-6 and M-50. An artificial canal follows the line of the unfinished Guadarrama Canal, with a wooden bridge, waterfowl and Spanish Civil War bunkers to spot. A sports center sits on the grounds, and the council runs family events here.

Parque El Paraíso is the largest park in San Blas-Canillejas, about 15 hectares of tree-lined paths with a pond, a sports circuit and a bike lane along its length. A recent renovation added 139 trees and thousands of shrubs. The central auditorium hosts district festivals and a free outdoor cinema in summer.

Quinta de Torre Arias is a 17-hectare former country estate with 51 tree species, including a 300-year-old holm oak and tall cedars. Paths pass historic greenhouses, ponds, water wheels, fountains and an ecological garden. A wooden walkway joins it to Quinta de los Molinos next door. Environmental educators lead free guided visits on Sundays.

Madrid Jumps is an indoor trampoline park with wall-to-wall trampolines and a Ninja Warrior course of obstacles to swing, climb and balance across. Two seating areas with a café let parents watch, and lockers hold bags and coats. Trampoline fitness classes and morning school visits run alongside the open jump sessions.

An observation deck at the top of the main tower of the Palacio de Cibeles, the city hall. The 360-degree view takes in Gran Vía, Calle de Alcalá, the Castellana and El Retiro, and maps on the deck help kids name the buildings they spot.

A lift goes up to floor 6E, then a staircase of 88 steps climbs the rest of the way.

The Museo Tiflológico is ONCE's museum for seeing and touching. Its biggest draw for kids is a hall of scale models of famous monuments from Spain and around the world, made to be explored with the hands, with free audio guides. Other rooms hold art by blind and low-vision artists and old braille machines and writing tools. Signs come in braille and large print.

The youth academy of Rayo Vallecano, based at the club foundation's sports complex in Ensanche de Vallecas. Boys' and girls' teams run from the youngest group, Debutantes, up to under-19, and every team plays in the official Madrid federation leagues. New players are placed in groups by level and coached in the club's own training method.

A walled garden beside the Prado holding more than 5,500 plant species from around the world, on terraces that step up the slope. Kids find about 1,500 trees, some of them centuries old, a terrace of bonsai and greenhouses to walk through. It is a living museum, not a park: paths only, no bikes, scooters, balls or picnics, so it suits curious kids more than runners.

Alcalá de Henares is the university town where Miguel de Cervantes, author of Don Quixote, was born in 1547. Kids can sit on the bench with the bronze Don Quixote and Sancho Panza outside his birth house, now a free museum, spot white storks nesting on the church towers, and climb the 109 steps of the Torre de Santa María for a bird's-eye view of Plaza de Cervantes.

Aranjuez is a royal riverside town on the Tajo, ringed by the palace gardens of the Spanish kings. Kids can run the paths of the Jardín del Príncipe, the biggest of them, see the decorated barges the royal court once sailed in at the Museo de Falúas Reales, take a 45-minute boat trip on the river, or loop the town on the Chiquitren tourist train.

Segovia's Roman aqueduct strides through the city center on stacked granite arches, and kids can stand right beneath them in Plaza del Azoguejo. At the far end of the old town, the Alcázar is a turreted castle on a rock above two rivers, with suits of armor inside and a 152-step spiral climb up the Torre de Juan II. The city tourism office also runs free treasure-hunt gymkhanas for families.

A grassy hill inside Madrid Río's Parque de la Arganzuela with eight giant metal tube slides set into its slope. Some are covered, some are doubles, one is steeper than the rest, and one suits kids with reduced mobility. Grown-ups are allowed on them too, so a parent can ride down with a small child. The summer splash beach is a short walk away.

Toledo is a walled hilltop city wrapped on three sides by the Tajo river gorge, with steep cobbled lanes, a Gothic cathedral and the square-towered Alcázar on top. Kids can fly over the river on an urban zip line, ride a little tourist train out to the Mirador del Valle viewpoint, or play the free Guardianes de Toledo game, a 26-challenge clue hunt across the old town.

Leganés's fenced play park on Calle Osa Menor is built around a 10-meter wooden castle, billed as the biggest robinia-wood play castle in Europe, with towers, bridges, climbing walls and three 6-meter metal slides. Around it are swings, a 32-meter zip line, ground trampolines, and a toddler corner with chalkboards and a textures area. It won Spain's Urban Parks award for best children's park in 2023.

Spain's national archaeology museum runs from prehistory to the Middle Ages across several floors. Kids head for the Egyptian rooms, with real mummies and painted coffins, and for Iberian stone sculptures like the Dama de Elche. Saturday family programs add theater, storytelling, the sounds of the ancient world and hands-on visit-workshops where kids try the trades of the past.

Puy du Fou España is a history park in the hills outside Toledo where the day is built around big outdoor shows, not rides. Kids watch knights clash, horses gallop and a sky full of falcons and eagles swoop over the crowd, then wander period villages with farm animals, craftspeople and two playgrounds. On show nights, El Sueño de Toledo replays 1,500 years of Spanish history in 80 minutes.

Parque Forestal de Valdebebas covers 470 hectares of young forest planted to recreate five landscapes of central Spain. Families follow 32 km of paths and 5 km of bike lanes past two lagoons and an artificial river, climb the Laberinto, a wooden spiral that doubles as a lookout, and end up at the hillside metal slides on the east side.

A canopy-topped play dome sits at the southeast corner of the Cuña Verde de O'Donnell, where Calle de José Bergamín meets Calle de Fuente Carrantona. Kids climb inside among rope nets and hanging colored balls, come down two metal tube slides, and take turns on a zip line next door, all on soft rubber flooring.

Older kids can head up the park to the pumptrack and dirt-jump circuit for bikes.

Torrejón de Ardoz's big town park holds 18 replicas of European landmarks, from a scaled-down Eiffel Tower and the Little Mermaid to Dutch windmills and Tower Bridge, plus a real slab of the Berlin Wall.

Kids hunt the monuments, then pick from the extras: rowing boats on the Gran Lago, a 180 m zip line from a 12 m tower, trampolines, rope courses and little boats for small kids.

A real Egyptian temple, built more than 2,200 years ago for Amun and Isis, rescued from the rising Nile and given to Spain in 1968 for its help saving the Abu Simbel temples. Inside are small, dim rooms with carved reliefs and a low-ceilinged terrace level. Outside, it stands over a pool, a short walk from Plaza de España.

A 19-meter-tall hall under a stained-glass ceiling, ringed by wrought-iron balconies and spiral staircases, with 5,800 minerals and more than 12,000 fossils on display. Kids spot meteorites, gemstones, crystals from every Spanish region, and fossil animals and plants going back to the Precambrian. An elevator also reaches the upper galleries.

Spain's national science and technology museum. In the round Gabinete hall, 19th-century lab instruments sit next to more than 90 hands-on modules where kids test sound, light, magnetism, and motion. The Patrimonio hall runs from early microscopes and zoetropes to old TVs and phones, the first bicycles, cars, and motorcycles.

Hundreds of life-size wax figures, from King Felipe VI and Cristiano Ronaldo to Tom Cruise, Dwayne Johnson, Pocoyo, and Maya the Bee. Kids can walk right up for photos, and QR codes along the route unlock augmented-reality extras. The Wax Horror Experience, a dark walk-through with live actors, comes with the same ticket.

Two indoor trampoline parks, one in the Oasiz mall in Torrejón de Ardoz and one in Bulevar Getafe. Both have a main court of more than 50 linked trampolines, battle beams, a jump tower, climbing walls and an artificial-turf football court. Oasiz adds a ninja course and the VALO Arena augmented-reality game; Getafe adds the SkyRider ride over the trampolines and a three-story KidsZone soft play.

This is one of the oldest natural history museums in the world, split into a geology wing and a biology wing. The fossil hall holds Dippy, a Diplodocus cast that arrived in 1913, beside the Megatherium giant ground sloth and a replica of Lucy. The Biodiversity hall, signed in Spanish and English, has a 21-meter fin whale skeleton, an African elephant and extinct animals like the Tasmanian tiger.

A former city slaughterhouse beside the Madrid Río park, now an arts center of brick halls and open plazas. Kids follow a free picture map through 100 years of its history and join weekend family workshops in embroidery, crafts and film.

Casa del Lector, the on-site reading center, runs storytelling, comic and baby book sessions. It suits kids who like making things more than kids after a playground.

Spain's first public planetarium sits in Tierno Galván park and reopened in 2026 after a year and a half of renovation. Its new dome projector puts 10 million stars overhead and plays full-dome 4K films. Weekend mornings bring films made for kids, including El cielo de Cloe, a sing-along sky lesson for preschoolers. The halls on the moon, eclipses and European space missions are free to walk.

La Herrería is the old royal forest below the El Escorial monastery, still owned by Patrimonio Nacional. Paths cross meadows of big ash trees, oak woods and a chestnut grove that has spread past the walls of the El Castañar estate, with stone fountains along the way. The classic family walk climbs gently to the Silla de Felipe II, a rock viewpoint looking back over the monastery.

La Pedriza is a maze of granite boulders, domes and rock towers in the Sierra de Guadarrama National Park. The park's visitor center sits at its entrance, with an exhibition on the sierra and a two-hectare garden holding a rock garden, a mini Pedriza, a bird hide, an aquarium and a reptile and amphibian center. Trails into the rocks start just past the barrier.

The Fuenfría Valley above Cercedilla is Scots pine forest crossed by old roads, including an excavated stretch of the Roman road that climbs to the Fuenfría pass. At the bottom, the national park visitor center has an exhibition and short films about the valley, a rock garden and a plot of native plants. Kids can play El tesoro de La Tuerta, a self-guided treasure hunt around the grounds.

Spain's biggest horse show is back after a year off. In the main arena, riders compete for three World Cups: show jumping, dressage and carriage driving. The crowd favorites are Pony Turf and the Jump & Drive race.

Next door, the Horse Hall has stands, food and non-stop horse shows. Horse-mad kids could stay all day; others may last a couple of hours.

The city's Christmas ice rink in the Plaza de Matadero, the open square of the old slaughterhouse that is now an arts center. Sessions are short, skate rental is included, and small kids can rent a skating walker, so it suits first-timers. It's part of the city's Christmas program, and Matadero runs other holiday shows and activities around the square.

The city's Christmas bus, running every holiday season since 2006. An open-top bus loops past Puerta de Alcalá, Serrano and Plaza de Colón, all lit up for the holidays. Kids see the lights from the top deck without pushing through crowds on foot. Dress warm: there's no roof, and December evenings get cold once you're moving.

A Christmas ice rink set up at Atlético de Madrid's stadium, with more than 4,000 square meters of ice. A skating ticket also opens the food halls and the day's activities: workshops, face painting, Santa visits, a gaming zone and a Playmobil space. Weekend mornings bring kids' shows with characters they know; evenings switch to DJs and concerts aimed at teens and adults.

Plaza de España turns into a Christmas village each winter: a 600 m² rink of natural ice under the Edificio España, about 40 wooden stalls of handmade gifts, and a food corner with chocolate con churros and German mulled wine. Families often browse and snack first, then decide on a skating turn. Double-blade skates strap onto small kids' shoes, so even preschoolers can try the ice.

Madrid's feast of Saint Anthony, patron saint of animals. Neighbors bring their pets to the Iglesia de San Antón to be blessed, then the Vueltas parade loops the nearby streets with police dog units and mounted Guardia Civil.

Kids also come for the panecillos, small saint's buns sold at the church. It suits animal-loving kids of any age, with or without a pet.

The closest ski station to Madrid, at 1,765 meters on the Sierra de Guadarrama pass. It has gentle beginner runs, a conveyor lift for first timers, a ski and snowboard school and gear rental. Non-skiers come for the snow itself and the mountain scenery. The C-9 mountain train from Cercedilla stops right at the pass.

A design and vintage market held one weekend a month inside the Museo del Ferrocarril, with more than 150 stalls set up between the old locomotives and carriages of the central hall. Outside are food trucks, terraces and a stage for live music. On Saturday afternoons a scale model railway in the garden gives small kids rides behind a miniature engine.

A three-floor market in Chueca, renovated to bring back the old neighborhood grocery: fresh fruit, ham, olive and flower stalls, counters cooking tapas and snacks, and a rooftop terrace at the top. Kids can point at olives and pickles in the curved glass counters, pick a snack from a different stand each, and ride the escalators between floors.

Hola Caracola is a neighborhood toy shop that has specialized since 2004 in brands that are hard to find complete elsewhere: LEGO, Playmobil, Sylvanian Families, Schleich, BRIO, Djeco, Haba and Magformers, plus board games, puzzles and craft kits. It suits a birthday-present run, or a kid who already knows exactly which set they want.

The city's big arcaded square is closed to traffic and walled in on all four sides, so kids can run the open paving around a bronze King Philip III on horseback. Count the nine arched gateways, then take the steep steps down through the Arco de Cuchilleros.

Street musicians and painters work the arcades, and on Sunday mornings collectors set up a stamp and coin market under the arches.

A riding school founded in 1982 as Pony Club La Moraleja, one of Spain's first schools to teach on ponies. Kids aged 4 to 9 ride Shetland ponies in the Mini Pony Club, in the arena, out in the countryside or doing vaulting. From about 9 or 10, riders move on to horses, with arena lessons and planned trail rides. It also runs therapeutic riding and birthday parties.

Almost 100 hectares of English-style garden on the slopes west of Moncloa, with steep lawns, winding paths and a 600-meter artificial stream with a path alongside. The Teleférico cable car leaves from the park for Casa de Campo, an Egyptian temple from the 2nd century BC stands at the southern tip, and three Civil War bunkers still sit near Avenida de Séneca.

Buitrago del Lozoya is a walled town on a loop of the Lozoya river, with medieval walls declared a national monument in 1931. Kids can climb onto the high south wall and clock tower, see siege engines and medieval weapons in the Dos Milenios de Artillería exhibition, and walk the low river wall for free. The Museo Picasso holds works the artist gave his friend Eugenio Arias, the town barber.

Chinchón's Plaza Mayor is a sloping square closed in by three-story houses with wooden balconies and arcades, used over the centuries as an open-air theater and a bullring. Kids can find the Torre del Reloj, a clock tower that lost its church in the Peninsular War, look up at the ruined Castillo de los Condes above town, and eat lunch on a balcony over the square.

Aventura Amazonia Cercedilla is one of Europe's biggest treetop adventure parks, in the pine woods of the Fuenfría valley in the Sierra de Guadarrama. Kids clip into a harness, do a short training course, then cross rope bridges and fly down zip lines. Seven circuits run from Kids and Explorador up to X-Trem, with 114 challenges and 33 zip lines; Canopy is all zip lines, over 470 meters.

Safari Madrid is a drive-through wildlife park near Aldea del Fresno. Families drive their own car along a route where giraffes, zebras, rhinos, elephants, bison and lions roam around the vehicles, then park and walk the rest: a petting corner, a reptile house, a crocodile grotto, a mini zoo and the bird of prey show, the first free-flight one in Spain when it began in 1978.

Parque Juan Carlos I spreads over 160 hectares around a one-kilometer ring, with a 1.9 km ría crossed by footbridges, a lake, an old olive grove and 19 giant outdoor sculptures. Kids get several play areas, including a wooden pirate ship, plus fountains and water jets, a mini train and bike loans, so it suits a whole morning on wheels.

Casa de Campo is the city's biggest park: 1,535 hectares of pine and oak woodland west of the river. Families come for the lake, where you can rent a rowing boat, and for a string of play areas with a castle, a pirate ship, a giant rope pyramid, zip lines and a long tube slide. A flat 4 km nature trail follows a stream away from the lake.

A pine forest inside the city, planted from the time of Isabel II with stone and Aleppo pines and home to more than 70 bird species. Kids follow woodland trails and a botanical path, picnic under the trees, and climb the Cerro de los Locos hill for a sunset view across the city. A few small play areas sit along the park's edges.

La Dama del Manzanares, a 13-meter woman's head in bronze crowned with loops of steel, sits on top of a 21-meter grass pyramid, and kids climb the long stairway for a view across the city. Below, the park follows the Manzanares River south with a riverside bike path, big lawns, small mazes and play areas.

On a separate hill by San Fermín, Mirador Caracola has a giant T-Rex climbing frame.

Kids follow the route Atlético de Madrid players take on match day at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano: the circular dressing room, the mixed zone, the tunnel onto the pitch, the benches and the press room where Simeone meets reporters. The presidential box looks out over the whole stadium. Next door, the interactive museum covers more than 120 years of club history with touchscreens, virtual reality goggles, projections and games.

A 110-meter lighting tower built in 1992, where a glass elevator climbs 92 meters to an enclosed viewing deck. From the windows, kids can pick out the Royal Palace, the Almudena Cathedral, the Four Towers, and the Guadarrama mountains. A rail around the deck holds scale models of 51 buildings in view, with facts in Spanish and English.

One of only five Olympic-size ice rinks in Spain, 60 by 30 meters, inside the Palacio de Hielo mall. Public sessions are open skating on rental or your own skates, and walker bears and igloos give wobbly beginners something to push. A Zamboni resurfaces the ice partway through long sessions. In the same mall, City Play has bowling, mini golf and arcade games, plus a kids' play center.

More than 50 optical illusions and interactive rooms across 650 square meters, built to fool your eyes and your balance. Kids cross the Vortex Tunnel, where a steady walkway feels like it is spinning, try to stand straight in the Tilted Room, and pose in the Upside-Down Room for photos. Logic puzzles and holograms fill the rest.

Animals from five continents share the zoo, including giant pandas, koalas, Sumatran elephants and white rhinos. The glass-pyramid aquarium, Spain's first tropical marine aquarium when it opened in 1995, holds about 330 species, two 18-meter walk-through tunnels and a shark tank. Sea lions Tau, Carlota and Saba star in a short daily demo, and a small train loops past the pandas, meerkats and lemurs.

A climbing gym with boulder, roped and auto-belay walls, plus Indoorkids, a separate zone for children with colorful, kid-shaped walls and play spaces. Kids can drop in with a parent, join the weekly climbing school from age 4, or come for Ludokids, three hours of supervised play. A café and restaurant on site lets parents watch from a table.

A bouldering gym with more than 180 problems over 2,500 m², with new problems set every week, plus 16 auto-belays on 40 short 6-meter routes. Small kids have their own separate family area, where every boulder is set for them. There is also a gym, changing rooms with family bathrooms, and a 350 m² cantina for a meal before or after climbing.

A large climbing gym with about 100 boulder problems reset every week, a 12-meter wall with 22 auto-belays and around 75 routes, and more than 120 roped routes up to 18 meters, including official speed routes. Kids can start at 4 with a guided intro session, join the weekly climbing school (ages 4 to 17), or climb alongside a parent. A bar serves pizza afterward.

The old Delicias station, opened in 1880, holds steam, electric and diesel locomotives and passenger cars lined up along its platforms under an iron-and-glass roof. Side rooms cover railway clocks, toy and model trains, and the Territorio Ferroviario, the largest model railway layout in Spain. A clue-hunt game for kids comes free with entry at the box office.

An indoor family park split by height. Kids 108 cm and up get the Zona Game: trampolines, a climbing area, high ropes, slides, archery, baseball, golf, a bowling lane and PS5 and Switch games, all on one ticket. Smaller kids have Zona Circus, with soft circuits, slides and obstacles sized for them. Kids' karts, a neon laser tag arena and an arcade are paid separately.

More than 2,150 m² of trampolines in the Las Rejas retail park, next to the Plenilunio mall. Beyond the open jump courts, kids run the Ninja Planet obstacle course, flip into a foam pit and a giant airbag, dunk on Slam Basket, play trampoline dodgeball and duck the spinning Barredera sweeper. There is also a bowling alley with projected effects and a sports bar for parents.

A real-snow slope covering 18,000 m² inside the Madrid Xanadú mall, kept between -6°C and -2°C all year. Kids ride giant rubber donuts down three ice tubing lanes, try snowbikes, or learn to ski and snowboard on the beginner slope before moving up to the expert run, the chairlift and the snowpark jumps. Boots, skis or board, and a helmet come with every ticket.

The tour starts in the Real Madrid museum, an interactive, audiovisual walk past the club's trophies, including all 15 European Cups. From the third-tier stands, kids look down over the renovated stadium, then walk through the First Team dressing room and sit in the dugouts beside the pitch. Photo spots put them next to a favorite player or the Champions League trophy, and the route ends in the official store.

Faunia recreates habitats from around the world, several of them indoors. In Los Polos, more than a hundred penguins from six species swim and nest in a hall kept near freezing. La Jungla is a humid Amazon rainforest where a tropical storm breaks every hour and manatees swim through a tunnel at its entrance. Outside are a farm with dwarf goats and a canyon of 18 life-size dinosaur replicas.

A 1916 iron-and-glass market hall beside Plaza Mayor, now home to more than 20 food stands instead of grocers. Kids can peer at fish laid out on ice, point at stacked fruit, and pick their own small bites: croquetas, meatballs, a mini pizza or a pastry.

More than 7 million people visit each year, so it suits a quick grazing stop more than a long sit-down meal.

Hayedo de Montejo is a protected beech forest on the banks of the Jarama river, part of a UNESCO World Heritage site. You can only go in on a guided walk in a small group, along one of three paths. In fall the beeches turn gold and copper.

It suits kids who can walk a couple of kilometers on forest paths and stay with the group.

Labs, museums and universities across the region open up for Madrid Science Week, and part of the program is built for kids. They explore models of the human body with a guide at CaixaForum, watch stone tools being made and fire lit by striking stone at the Museo de San Isidro, or design a Roman building. Preschoolers get short color workshops in Alcobendas.

Each Halloween, Madrid's district cultural centers, youth centers and libraries put on free activities for kids: costume contests, scary storytelling, craft workshops, face painting, sports gymkhanas and haunted passages for teens. Most are small and local, so check your own district first.

Madrid's big Christmas fair for kids, run by IFEMA with Productores de Sonrisas. The exhibition halls fill with theater, video games, robotics, traditional games, creative workshops, cooking demos, sports, magic, music and storytelling. Kids try things rather than watch: building with LEGO in one hall, meeting firefighters and police in the other. It suits families looking for a long indoor outing over the holidays.

A spacious park in Boadilla del Monte, remodeled in June 2024. Colorful fenced play areas sit on rubber flooring, with one zone for ages 3 to 12 and a separate zone for teens. Beyond the playgrounds there is a drinking fountain, a walking promenade, LED lighting for evenings and a fenced dog area with its own water fountain.

Lavapiés' municipal market, open since 1944, mixes old-school fruit, meat and fish stalls with counters cooking food from Mexico, Peru, Japan, Venezuela, Chile, Greece, Asturias and the Canary Islands. Kids can pick tacos, arepas or croquetas from different stands and eat at the shared tables in the central plaza. One stall, La Casquería, sells secondhand books by weight, so a young reader can fill a bag.

The Teatro Real opera house's own stage for children and teens, inside the Daoíz y Velarde cultural center. The season mixes operas for kids, ballet, concerts, musical stories, silent films with live music and family music workshops.

Shows play in two halls, the main hall and the smaller Sala Pacífico, with Teatro Real artists and visiting companies.

A rooftop 56 meters above Calle de Alcalá, reached by a glass-door lift from the lobby of the Círculo de Bellas Artes. Kids stand beneath the bronze Minerva, the Roman goddess of wisdom and the arts, who crowns the building, and look out across the city's skyline.

A cafe-restaurant runs on the terrace from breakfast until late at night.

ElectricBricks is a LEGO specialist that also runs robotics and coding workshops. The shop sells sets, loose bricks and parts, minifigures and educational robotics kits, and the same space hosts school visits, summer camps and birthday parties built around building and programming. A good stop for a kid hunting one specific piece rather than a whole set.

A flea market of more than 1,000 stalls, recorded as early as 1740, that spreads from Plaza de Cascorro down the steep Calle de la Ribera de Curtidores and its side streets. Kids hunt trading cards, old magazines and records, kitchenware and odd objects of every age; each street has its own mix.

The shops stay open all week; the stalls come out on Sundays and holidays.

The busy half-moon square where Spain measures its road distances from. Kids can stand on the Kilómetro Cero plaque set in the pavement, then look up at the clock on the Casa de Correos, whose chimes the whole country eats 12 grapes to at New Year.

Across the square, a bronze bear reaches into a strawberry tree, the city's symbol and its favorite meeting spot.

The water park next to Parque Warner, themed on the Looney Tunes, the Flintstones and Scooby-Doo across 40,000 m². It has two wave pools, one just for kids, plus Agua Aventura, an island with eight slides and a giant tipping bucket, and a smaller kids' island called Todos al Agua. Río Loco is a gentle tube ride that ends in a 10,000-liter splash.

A Hawaiian-themed water park with a 2,000 m² white-sand beach, a wave pool and more than 15 water rides. The kids' zone has mini versions of the big rides (Waikiki, Zigzag, soft slides and a rapid river) plus Tiki Island, covered in water jets. Older kids head for Kangaroa's six mat slides, and Kilauea is the biggest new ride in the park's history.

A bouldering and roped-climbing gym on an industrial estate between Leganés and Alcorcón, with a separate kids' center, The Climb Kids, built for ages 3 to 12. The kids' side has more than 600 m² of climbable walls plus a zip line. The climbing school sorts kids into play, sport and advanced groups by age and level, and a food truck serves home-style food after the session.

A big racket club in Montecarmelo with 30 padel courts and 17 tennis courts, indoor and outdoor, plus a pool, a lawn and a restaurant. Its academy runs year-long tennis and padel school groups for kids, with the same coach, classmates and time slot from September to June, and a summer campus that mixes padel, tennis, multisport and pool games.

Ávila is ringed by a complete medieval wall with 87 towers, and you can walk along the top of about 1.7 km of it, looking down into gardens and across the rooftops to the plain. Kids can spot Roman tombstones and carved stone boars reused as building blocks in the east wall, then cross the river to Los Cuatro Postes, where the whole walled city fits in one view.

About 200 aircraft fill seven hangars and a large outdoor field beside the Cuatro Vientos airfield. Kids walk past early wood-and-canvas flying machines, seaplanes, fighter jets, trainers and helicopters, with the outdoor field split into zones by type. A café and a gift shop sit by the outdoor display.

Parque Warner Madrid is a movie theme park in San Martín de la Vega with five areas: Hollywood Boulevard, Cartoon Village, Old West Territory, DC Super Heroes World and Movie World Studios. Young kids spend most of the day in Cartoon Village, with Bugs Bunny's burrow, Tweety and Sylvester's house, small coasters, water rapids and a Flintstones driving school, while older kids head for the big coasters.

Rowing boats on El Retiro's big lake, dug in the 1630s for royal water shows and mock sea battles. Families take turns at the oars and row out toward the Alfonso XII monument, with its curved colonnade and horseback statue on the shore. Two of the 100 boats open at the back so a wheelchair rolls straight on.

El Retiro spreads 125 hectares of lawns, shady paths and formal gardens around a big rowing lake, watched over by the Alfonso XII monument. Kids hunt for the Fallen Angel statue, peer into the restored Monkey Pit from the old royal menagerie, and watch puppets at the Teatro de Títeres. Playgrounds of different sizes are spread through the park, and the wide paved paths suit scooters, skates and bikes.

Parque del Cerro del Tío Pío is a run of rounded grassy hills, the reason locals call it the Siete Tetas. Kids race up and roll down the slopes, ride the bike lane and picnic on the lawns. The lookout at the top faces the whole city skyline, a popular spot at sunset.

Three playgrounds sit around the edges, and a kiosk with a terrace serves drinks.

Parque Enrique Tierno Galván covers 45 hectares of grassy hills. Kids roll down the slopes, ride the bike paths, cross the walkways over three ponds and climb to the lookouts behind a 5,000-seat open-air amphitheater. Two playgrounds sit inside the park.

The Planetario de Madrid is here too, so a dome show and a run on the hills fit into one morning.

Spain's national art museum holds Velázquez's Las Meninas, Bosch's Garden of Earthly Delights and Goya's Saturn. For kids, the Prado's own children's itinerary follows Infanta Margarita, the girl at the center of Las Meninas, and her friends through nine paintings, with free audio and short videos on the museum website. Holiday weekends add family workshops in the galleries.

Rides range from Abismo, one of the fastest roller coasters in the world at 105 km/h, to Tornado, an inverted coaster where legs dangle, and Star Flyer, the park's tallest ride, a chain swing with views across the city. Nickelodeon Land is the younger kids' zone, with a Paw Patrol roller coaster, Rugrats bumper cars, a Ninja Turtles driving school and SpongeBob's Splash Bash, where riders fire water.

Parque Central is the 45-hectare main park of Tres Cantos, built around a large artificial lake with fish and birds. A themed garden holds twelve garden types, from roses to bamboo. Play areas are spread across the park, with a skate park, bike park and parkour area for older kids.

A public library in two pavilions of the Casa de Fieras, El Retiro's old zoo, built under King Fernando VII. Its 3,794 square meters on two floors include a children's room, a corner for pre-readers, a youth section and a room of books on nature and the environment.

It sits inside the park, so a library stop pairs easily with a run around Retiro.

The city's cultural center just for children, teens and their families, inside the Quinta de los Molinos park. The Urbanoteca is a free-play space redesigned every term; a calm 0-5 room has rugs and floor-level furniture; a reading and craft lab keeps board games and art supplies; and a small auditorium shows kids' plays and films.

Workshops also spill out into the park.

A cultural center run by Fundación Montemadrid in a 1913 neo-Mudéjar brick building. Families come for the weekend program of workshops, concerts and kids' films, and for the children's library, open most mornings and afternoons.

The building is free to walk around, with exhibitions, a cafe and a rooftop terrace with a vegetable garden that opens on Friday and Saturday evenings.

Moraleja Green is a two-building mall joined by a footbridge: the north building holds shops, a supermarket and the Cinesa Luxe cinema, the south one fashion and El Jardín, a garden courtyard of restaurants. Kids come for the bouncy castles, a giant one outdoors in El Jardín and an indoor play zone on the north building's second floor, plus free family events through the year.

A 1,970 m² climbing center inside the X-Madrid mall, with bouldering and roped walls for every level. Kids from 4 can try Clip 'n Climb, a circuit of colorful challenge walls run by an instructor. The climbing school groups kids from 4 to 13 by age and level, a teen group takes 14 to 18, and parents can watch from the café or climb in their own group.

A chocolate café down a narrow passageway between Puerta del Sol and the Teatro Real, frying churros since 1894. Two floors of white marble tables and a tiled counter, with porras (thicker churros) and cakes too.

Kids dunk churros into cups of thick hot chocolate, a warm stop on a cold walk through the center. A sister shop across the square sells truffles and ice cream to take away.

The Family Scalofrini are a band of monster musicians who swap between more than 15 instruments, from tuba and banjo to double bass, in a spooky old castle set. Songs run through jazz, swing, rock and cabaret, with musical games kids join in and stories about ghosts, vampires and skeletons with feelings. The fright is played for laughs.

Three natural pools on the Lozoya River, a short way from the El Paular monastery, and the only stretch of river in Rascafría where swimming is allowed. Wide lawns line the water and the Sierra de Guadarrama rises behind. The water comes from mountain snowmelt and stays cold even in high summer, so ease small kids in slowly.

A sports park run by the Comunidad de Madrid on Avenida de Filipinas, on the site of a club that Canal de Isabel II water workers started in 1930. In summer it opens a recreational pool and a separate kids' pool. All year there is a skating rink, a sports hall, clay and artificial-grass tennis courts, padel and football pitches.

Madrid Río runs more than 10 km along the Manzanares, on land freed up when the M-30 ring road went underground. Kids get 17 play areas built from wood and hemp rope, with spider webs, hanging bridges and a big zip line, plus a hill of giant slides and a summer splash beach. Car-free paths suit bikes and scooters, and birds and fish are back in the river.

A Halloween gymkhana at La Talaverona, the Las Rozas town hall's environmental education center. Kids and their grown-ups hear some of the eeriest and strangest stories from the natural world, then make something together in a Halloween craft workshop. It is a small guided group, not a party, so it suits kids who like nature and stories more than costumes and crowds.

The Magic Forest is an indoor play park beside the Kinépolis cinemas in Ciudad de la Imagen, with slides, climbing frames, a volcano and bouncy mats over more than 1,100m². It is throwing a kids' Halloween party, and the program has not been announced yet.

Imagina, the Alcobendas town hall's youth center, puts on a Halloween afternoon for kids. In 2025 that meant craft workshops by age group, face painting, a costume photocall and a kids' Halloween disco, plus a separate witch story time for babies and toddlers. Most of it was drop-in, so it suits kids who want to wear a costume and try a bit of everything.

A landscaped park of more than 63,000 square meters on the edge of Villanueva de la Cañada. It has three zones: a multi-sport court for basketball and football, a play area with swings, slides and climbing frames for younger children, and a skatepark. A footpath leads to a viewpoint over the Sierra de Guadarrama.

A forest-themed indoor play park of more than 1,100 m². Kids climb giant flower stalks and slide back down, find the Secret World behind a big wall, with mazes, mats, giant slides and a football pitch, and leave the volcano down a lava slide. Trained monitors supervise the play area, and parents can sit in the café or head out for a while.

A big indoor ball park off Calle Princesa, running since 1997 and spread over 800 m². The play stations include an obstacle course with a rope bridge and a slide into a ball pool, trampolines, two inflatable play cities, ball pits and a small football pitch. Monitors supervise the whole time, so parents can leave children and go for a coffee nearby.

The first shopping center in the Madrid region, opened in 1983, with more than 200 shops across three floors around a skylit atrium. For kids the draw is the LEGO Store, with a Pick & Build wall of loose bricks and a station to build your own minifigure. Ozone Bowling adds lanes, arcade games and simulators, and Cines La Vaguada has eight screens for a rainy afternoon.

Liberespacio is a children's and young adult bookshop where the booksellers read what they stock and help you pick by age and taste. Its event space hosts storytimes, author visits, sing-alongs for babies and family workshops most weeks, plus a weekly comics course and a monthly creative writing workshop for older kids.

A city-run sports center at the Puerta del Ángel edge of Casa de Campo, rebuilt in 2021. Indoors there is a 25-meter pool plus a shallow teaching pool for small children. In summer three outdoor pools open: a kids' pool and two recreational pools of 33 by 16 and 36 by 25 meters. Swim classes run for every age.

The pool complex built for the 1986 World Swimming Championships. It has two 50-meter Olympic pools (one indoor, one outdoor under a winter bubble), a diving pool with 4 platforms and 8 springboards, a teaching pool, and a warm-water pool used for baby classes. Summer adds a semicircular paddling pool with a waterfall and a kids' pool. Swim classes start at 15 months.

Circo Alegría's first Madrid production turns a big top into an underwater world. International acrobats perform around synchronized dancing fountains, with 3D effects, mermaids, pirates, sharks and storms. Giant kinetic whales float over the audience. A story about caring for the oceans runs through it, with plenty of humor and music.

Titirimadroño is Madrid's international puppet theater festival, held each fall in Puente de Vallecas. Much of the week is for adults, but the closing weekend is made for families: puppet shows in a park and indoors, a hands-on puppet-making workshop, and play installations built from recycled materials.

Some shows add Spanish Sign Language or live audio description, and every space is wheelchair accessible.

Faunia's Halloween puts the park's venomous and nocturnal animals up front: snakes, tarantulas, Komodo dragons, lemurs and bats. Educators give short themed talks in five zones about the threats facing the planet and how families can help. This year it doubles as a Superthings trick-or-treat: kids who catch the talks claim a Superthing toy at the entrance shop, and can meet the character Enigma for a free photo.

A Halloween afternoon at the Museo de la Fresa, a working farm in the old market gardens of Aranjuez. Costumed characters have taken over the field: kids solve a clue game to get in, visit the farm's interpretation center, pick a pumpkin and decorate it, then make edible Halloween figures from donuts and cookies. Every child goes home with a pumpkin.

A Christmas theme park set up in the Real Jardín Botánico Alfonso XIII, the Complutense university's garden. It has three shows: Hontana, El Gran Libro Mágico; the Three Kings' Royal Camp; and Santa's Village. Between them, kids find an ice rink, street parades, a fairy path and a Christmas market. Most of it is outdoors on sand and gravel, so dress warm and bring a sturdy stroller.

Majadahonda's biggest park covers 37,000 square meters, with a fenced play area of rope-net climbing frames, slides and a tall timber tower. There is also a dog area with agility equipment, exercise stations for adults and seniors, and wide paths across lawns and a planted hillside.

Cerro del Aire is a pine-wooded park whose 2023 makeover added four play areas built around giant robinia-wood animals. Kids climb a 4.6-meter lion with three platforms and slides, explore a 5-meter sparrow reached by an accessible ramp, and scale the nets of a hollow owl to a 360-degree lookout at the top. There is also a long slide set into the hillside and a skating rink.

The Torre Ingeniería is a play tower almost 10 meters tall, built to look like a factory: two towers joined by a closed bridge, painted pipes and valve wheels, three slides, a fire pole, rope climbs and bar ladders. Around it sit a nearly 4-meter inclusive tower of play panels, nest and baby swings, an accessible carousel, and a sand area with toy diggers.

Under the four skyscrapers of Cuatro Torres, the playground in Parque Caleido is built around a wooden pirate ship with sails, rope ladders and yellow slides, set on soft rubber flooring. A zip line runs nearby, and the park around it has sports areas, terraced lawns and paths linking the Castellana with Avenida de Monforte de Lemos.

The play hill in Parque de la Gavia is the Colina del Reciclaje, built partly from old tires found on the site: a rocket-shaped climbing tower, slides running down the slope and a climbing wall with routes at different heights.

A few minutes' walk away, the Bosque de los Sentidos adds zip lines, adventure slides, an inclusive play zone and outdoor musical instruments.

Sweet Space Museum is a walk-through art space inside the ABC Serrano mall, with 10 themed rooms designed by artists including Agatha Ruiz de la Prada. Kids jump into two ball pits (one sized for little ones), set off mechanical ball-and-light circuits, try candy tastings and pose for photos as staff guides lead the way. It suits kids who like bright colors and hands-on rooms more than quiet galleries.

Islazul is a big mall south of the city center with more than 180 shops and restaurants. For families the draw is Bolera Ilusiona: 18 American-style bowling lanes, billiards, an arcade with prize-ticket machines and a small play area for younger kids. Yelmo Cines sits in the same building, so bowling and a film fit into one rainy afternoon.

Westfield Parquesur is one of the biggest malls south of the city, and the kid draws sit under one roof: a LEGO Store with a Pick & Build wall and a build-a-minifigure station, Babylon Park with 110 arcade machines and six rides including a roller coaster and bumper cars, plus Bowling Sur and a Cinesa cinema. It suits a cold or rainy day.

A big two-floor shopping center off the A-5 where, for most families, the shops come second. Inside are SnoZone, an indoor ski slope with real snow all year, and Atlantis Aquarium, plus a bowling alley, pirate mini golf, a Cinesa cinema and SicherFun, a play area with a two-level ball pit and supervised games.

It suits a cold, wet or hot day, when kids need room to move.

This El Corte Inglés spreads across four buildings between Puerta del Sol and Plaza de Callao. In the Callao building, toys fill the 3rd floor, kids' books and art supplies sit one floor up, and the 9th-floor food hall serves ice cream, burgers and pasta.

Kids' clothes, shoes and baby gear are on the 7th floor of the Preciados building. It suits a rainy-day toy browse or a cool break.

A certified organic family farm in the Jarama valley where kids push a wheelbarrow into the field and pick their own pumpkin. Between rounds there's a hay maze, a slide and hay-bale photo spots, plus a shop terrace where parents can sit. On workshop days a booked session adds a tractor ride, farm animals and hollowing out and decorating a pumpkin. Works well for toddlers and younger school kids.

A pick-your-own pumpkin patch on a farm in the Aranjuez market gardens. Kids pull their pumpkin from the field and paint it, ride a tractor trailer and look for the way out of a big corn maze, while the smallest ones get a hay maze and a corn pit. Sack races run for kids and grown-ups.

Each fall, shepherds walk a flock of sheep from Casa de Campo into the city center, down Calle Mayor to Cibeles, where they hand the City Council a symbolic toll of 50 maravedíes. Kids get to see a real flock up close on streets they know from the car or the bus. It is on foot, so it suits kids who can wait for the flock to reach them.

El Curiosity, a sightseeing boat on the Tajo river in Aranjuez, becomes the Witch's Boat for Halloween. The cruise is a family party on the water, with games, contests, karaoke, a DJ and a photo booth run by entertainers on board. Kids are encouraged to come in costume, since the contests are built around them. The later sailings go out after dark.

Melchor, Gaspar and Baltasar ride down the Castellana on three royal floats, with pages tossing candy and street-theater troupes in between. It ends at Cibeles with the Kings' speech and fireworks. For Spanish kids this is the night before the presents arrive, so the curb buzzes with excitement. Little ones see best from shoulders; it runs long and cold for kids who tire fast.

Every fall the Botánico's gardeners set out about 30 kinds of pumpkin from the garden's vegetable plot, outside the Santiago Castroviejo greenhouse. Kids spot giant Big Max pumpkins, sponge gourds and the bottle-shaped pilgrim's gourd that children nickname the "canteen". It's look, don't touch, so it suits a curious kid more than one who wants to pick a pumpkin. The plot where they grew is a short walk away.

Many of Madrid's districts hold their own Three Kings parade in the days around the big one on the Castellana: floats, the Kings waving from the top, and candy thrown to kids at the curb. Some end with a reception where children meet the Kings or hand over their letters. Crowds are usually smaller than downtown, so small kids get a front-row view closer to home.

Madrid, Navidad de Encuentro turns Matadero, the old slaughterhouse arts center by Madrid Río, into a Christmas village. The hook for kids is the fake snow that falls on Plaza Matadero every evening. Around it sit an ice rink, play installations by street-theater companies, craft workshops, storytelling and classic Christmas films at Cineteca.

Each edition picks a theme. Last year's was books and storytelling.

Every fall, Zoo Aquarium de Madrid in Casa de Campo runs a Halloween season. Some animals get their food inside pumpkins, an enrichment trick that makes them work for the treat, and educators give themed talks on the creatures behind spooky legends and the threats they face in the wild. It is about animals, not frights, so it suits animal lovers more than kids chasing scares.

El Vivero is Colmenar Viejo's historic park, dating from the late 1950s and renovated in 2019. The play area has towers, slides and climbing frames on continuous rubber flooring. Around it are classic gardens with a granite fountain, a pine grove with walking paths, an outdoor fitness circuit and a shaded picnic area.

A Wild West playground built around a tall wooden fort tower with spiral metal slides. Painted jail and blacksmith fronts line a small town street, toy-train wagons suit toddlers, and the whole area has a sand floor. Benches around the edge give parents a place to sit.

Parque de Andalucía covers 160,000 square meters of lawns and paths around a lake with a fountain jet in the middle. Geese, carp and turtles live in and around the water. A playground sits among the trees, and there is an off-leash dog area. The MUNCYT science museum and the fairgrounds are alongside.

Two man-made lakes crossed by several bridges anchor this park in north Pozuelo, with a spurting geyser and children's playgrounds beside the water. Paths wind around the lakes, with benches for parents to watch from.

Parque de la Fuente del Berro is a 13-hectare garden on the grounds of a former royal estate, built in terraced levels. Winding paths and rustic stone stairs link open meadows, fountains, waterfalls and a pair of small ponds, with monuments to the poets Bécquer and Pushkin and a small palace left from the estate. A running circuit and a botanical trail loop through it.

A neighborhood ball park with giant slides, ball pools, a zip line across the play structure, a climbing wall and a small football pitch with goals. Toddlers have their own corner with soft mats and play pieces. Parents wait in a seating area with coffee, soft drinks and snacks, close enough to keep an eye on the play.

A ball park that has hosted children's birthdays since 1997, with a multi-level climbing structure, tube slides and ball pools, plus a separate area for under-3s. The newest additions are a zip line and a ball cannon. Free play runs on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings with no booking; the rest of the week the park is mostly reserved for birthday parties.

A family theater by the Manzanares near Príncipe Pío, home to Compañía La Bicicleta, which has staged children's musicals here since 1983: The Wizard of Oz, Little Red Riding Hood, A Christmas Carol. Visiting companies add concerts, puppets and shows for toddlers.

The 600-seat hall has stalls and a mezzanine, and every seat has a clear view of the 12-meter stage.

Railway volunteers rescued a steam locomotive from scrap in 1990 and brought a stretch of the old Tajuña line back to life. Today it pulls wooden carriages about 4 km from La Poveda station in Arganda to the Laguna del Campillo stop in Rivas, crossing the Jarama twice on a 175-meter iron bridge. At the lagoon, passengers can step off to watch the 10-minute switch for the ride back.

Quinta de los Molinos is a 21-hectare former country estate named for its metal Chicago-style windmills. Its south half is an orchard of 1,919 almond trees that turn pink and white in late winter, while the north half has winding paths, ponds and a small palace. The Espacio Abierto inside runs a cultural program for kids and families.

A wooden fortress of towers and platforms stands in the renovated Plaza de España, named for Barataria, the island Sancho Panza governs in Don Quixote. Six slides run from 1 m to 6 m tall, so toddlers and older kids each find their drop. About twenty swings and seesaws hang from steel frames around it, and the Cervantes monument with both characters stands nearby.

A red dragon almost 20 meters long fills Plaza de las Tizas, and kids climb right through its body: rope-net floors, rings, bars, passageways and a tube slide inside. The tail adds a climbing wall and a ladder, and the ground around it has swings, sensory panels and balance trails, with accessible pieces for shared play.

It sits halfway along the new walkway from central Usera down to Madrid Río.

A 6,000-square-meter aquarium on the first floor of the Madrid Xanadú mall, with 10,000 animals across 20 marine habitats. The open-ocean hall is a domed walkway where blacktip and gray reef sharks, rays, and a loggerhead turtle swim around you. The polar zone has a column of snow kids can touch, and the Passport game handed out at the desk ends with a medal.

A small neighborhood theater run since 2004 by its resident company, Tarambana Teatro. Next to adult plays and Friday concerts, its family program brings puppet and object theater, clown, shows for babies and the company's own comedies, often from touring companies around Spain.

A small two-room theater with a bar in Lavapiés, a 10-minute walk from Sol, known for close-up shows where performers stand a couple of meters from the front row. On weekend and holiday mornings and afternoons it runs hour-long trick and illusion shows for ages 3 and up, where kids get called on stage.

Babies from 6 months to 4 years get 30-minute shows of music, dance and color.

Twenty hectares of romantic gardens below the Royal Palace, laid out so a long lawn climbs straight up to the palace facade. Peacocks wander the paths, two big old fountains mark the central avenue, and shady winding walks lead off on both sides. It is one of the quietest green spaces in the center, with a café terrace and public toilets inside.

Madrid Río's summer beach has no sand and no pool: three oval water areas in Parque de la Arganzuela, each with its own effect. One is a thin sheet of water to splash through, one has jets shooting up to different heights, and one makes a cloud of mist. Kids run through in swimsuits, and the lawns and loungers around the edges give parents somewhere to sit.

Getafe calls itself the cradle of Spanish aviation, and this El Bercial playground is built around a blue play replica of the CASA C-212 Aviocar plane, made in the town. Kids walk up a ramp into the fuselage, take the controls in the cockpit, and slide off a wing. Around it are trampolines, a zip line, a cloud-shaped climbing hill with a rope web, a big nest swing and a toddler area.

Disney On Ice brings scenes from five films to the rink: Aladdin's royal parade, Anna and Elsa from Frozen, Woody, Buzz, Jessie and Forky from Toy Story 4, Simba's safari from The Lion King, and Mary Poppins up on London's rooftops with the lamplighters. Skaters mix choreography and acrobatics with the songs kids know.

It suits young Disney fans best. A tween tired of princesses may find it young.

Italian bubble artist Pierpaolo Laconi, who performs as Whitedream, builds a whole show out of soap bubbles, blowing, shaping and moving them through a string of tricks set to a soundtrack made for the show, while dancer Gessica Alfieri performs around them. Laconi holds a Guinness World Record for the largest bubble blown by hand.

It is a visual show, made to hold adults as well as kids.

A pirate ship with a slide sits in a sandy play area at the eastern end of the Cuña Verde de Latina, a long park that runs through Los Cármenes and Lucero. Kids climb over the decks and come down the slide, and a viewpoint a minute's walk away looks across to the Almudena Cathedral and the Royal Palace.

The rest of the park adds ponds, rose gardens, Civil War bunkers and a bike lane end to end.
