What you need to know
- Monday, Nov 9 is a holiday in Madrid city only, so schools in the capital are closed; the rest of the Community works as normal
- The procession leaves right after the 11am mass on the Plaza de la Almudena, goes along Calle Mayor to Plaza Mayor and comes back by Bailén; the Madrid folk groups perform on Plaza de la Villa as the statue passes at about 11:30am
- Flower offering all weekend on the cathedral esplanade: Saturday and Sunday 10am to 8pm, Monday 3pm to 8pm, with Madrid's traditional dress groups parading from the cathedral to Plaza de la Villa on Saturday and Sunday at 4pm
About
Madrid's day for its patron saint, the Virgin of La Almudena. After an open-air mass beside the cathedral, her statue is carried through the old center to Plaza Mayor and back. It is also the season for the corona de la Almudena, a ring-shaped pastry that bakeries all over the city sell for the occasion. Best for kids who like a procession and a treat after.
