Worth the Drive: 5 August Festivals Outside Barcelona

In August the festa major season moves out of the city. An hour or two in any direction, towns hand their streets over for a week, and they go places the city festes never will: foam parties in the square, a bike race where the whole town soaks the riders, fireworks over the sea. It's a chance for kids to connect with the people and traditions of the region they live in, and to see a side of it beyond Barcelona. Each town puts its very best on show for these few days, with lots going on for all ages. Pick one for a day out, or make a weekend of it.

SF → Barcelona (Eixample), kids 7 & 3, Updated July 2026

These are ordered by drive time from Barcelona, from the closest (about 45 minutes) to the farthest (about 2 hours).

August is festa major month in the towns, so I trimmed this list to the five that are on right now. All five are free.

The central days bring morning gatherings, the Vow of the People ceremony and fire shows after dark.

Les Nits Daurades is Salou's summer festa major: two weeks of concerts, parades, traditional dances and family shows across the town center and seafront. The closing stretch is the biggest, with a tribute concert, an evening market on the jetty, a sea procession and the festa's big fireworks. Kids get craft workshops most late afternoons, and this year the festa folded the total solar eclipse into its program.

Bagà's festa major fills the village center with concerts in the squares, sports tournaments, kids' craft workshops, magicians, outdoor games and traditional events. It opens with a speech by Jordi Garcia Petit at Plaça Tiraval. Most of it is outdoors and drop-in, so it suits families who want an unhurried day in a mountain village more than a packed program.
