Every winter since 1996 the Ateneu Popular 9 Barris, a neighborhood arts center in an old asphalt plant in Nou Barris, has made a brand new circus show for the Christmas holidays.

This is contemporary circus: no big top or ringmaster, just five or six artists on a theater stage doing rope, acrobatics, balancing and clowning, woven together with live music and a loose story.

A ceramics studio on Balmes running kids' classes, parent-and-child sessions and summer casals alongside private birthday groups. Children hand-build a bowl or a mug and decorate it with ceramic colors, guided by a teacher, with clay, glazing and two firings covered. Older kids can take the potter's wheel instead.

FC Barcelona's grassroots football school, run at the Joan Gamper training complex in Sant Joan Despí using the same methodology and playing style as the club's academy. It is a season-long commitment: players train twice a week and play Sunday-afternoon matches in an internal league from September to June. Places are not open enrollment, so children sit level tests and registration is limited to Catalonia residents.

Kids build stone arches the way medieval masons did, inside the Royal Shipyards that house the Maritime Museum. Then they carve their own stonemason's mark in clay and take it home. The 2026 edition centers on the 2024 DANA storm, with performers and archaeologists recreating how the ancient inhabitants would have responded. Other reenactments cover trade and daily life, plus costume photos and a vermut gathering for adults.

A working candy and chocolate factory where kids spend 90 minutes making their own pieces alongside an artisan. They mold two or three items using screen prints of leaves, animals and letters, plus marshmallows, wooden-toy molds and a treasure box, then package everything to take home. An open family workshop runs every Saturday morning, and private groups book the room for birthdays.

Birthday parties run two and a half hours in a private kitchen with a chef who works with children. Groups pick the menu: cupcakes, pizza, sushi or the birthday cake itself, run either as a straight workshop or as a Masterchef-style contest between teams. The children eat what they cook, and balloons and birthday decoration are included.

Three floors of pharaonic art from the Fundació Arqueològica Clos, with over 1,100 pieces: mummies and a netted burial, painted sarcophagi, a granite lion, jewelry, and stone reliefs covered in hieroglyphs. Kids can borrow an activity sheet, follow the English audioguide, and on weekends join family workshops where they mummify a figure or excavate a dig pit.

Families explore the Barcelona Shipyards' construction techniques by building stone arches using ancient methods, then create personalized stonemason marks from clay to take home. Part of the "Royal Shipyards: stones that tell Barcelona" program developed for Barcelona's UNESCO-UIA World Capital of Architecture 2026 designation.

La Nube and El Gato sit 250 meters apart: in one a hacker is wiping the files off the cloud, in the other a grandmother's cat has vanished. A game master goes in with the group for the full 60 minutes, and puzzles run on logic and observation, with no scares or physical challenges. Each room holds up to 10 players, so larger birthday groups split across both.

Paradox Museum turns its optical illusions, upside-down rooms and hands-on exhibits into a Castaween scavenger hunt. Kids look for six hidden Castaween characters between the illusions, and finding them all earns a prize. The hunt is an optional add-on, so the museum works just as well without it.

A street party put on by the neighborhood's shopkeepers for the Castanyada and Halloween. Shops and restaurants set up stalls along the street, local groups run activities, and last year there was music, dancing, workshops, face painting and roasted chestnuts.

Older kids come for the passatge del terror, a real haunted passage. With little ones, come early for the stalls, and head home before the late band.

Girona's old town, with its colored houses over the Onyar river, makes a storybook setting for Christmas. The market fills the arcaded Plaça de la Independència with wooden stalls selling nativity figures, Tiós, wooden toys and torrons, the almond nougat Catalans eat at Christmas.

The ice rink is the kids' favorite: covered, with a separate ice slide where children race down three lanes on sleds.

Barcelona Bosc Urbà is an aerial adventure park under the giant solar canopy at Parc del Fòrum. Two harnessed rope circuits run five meters up: 14 family challenges with barrel tunnels, wobbly bridges and zip lines, plus 15 tougher sports challenges. A netted high-altitude trampoline zone and a food truck with monitor-led kids' games complete the park.

A bowling and arcade center on the top floor of the Diagonal Mar mall, run by Ilusiona. It packs lit bowling lanes with bumpers, next-generation arcade and ticket-redemption machines, VR driving and space-battle simulators, and a large space-themed soft-play park for younger kids. Air-conditioned, with a bar and birthday party rooms.

SENSAS Barcelona is a sensory experience where small teams move through darkened rooms completing challenges that test touch, smell, taste, sight and hearing. There are five themed spaces, and teams work together to advance from room to room. Adults and kids go through as a single team, which makes a big difference if anyone is nervous about the dark.

Aventurico runs themed escape rooms and interactive group games designed with kids in mind, from an Alice in Wonderland adventure to superhero and secret agent missions, some with virtual reality. The two Eixample venues are at Roger de Flor 89 near Plaça Tetuan and Diputació 455 near the Monumental. A good pick for birthdays and for older kids who have outgrown the ball pit.

The museum fills the Palau Nacional, the domed 1929 palace above the Magic Fountain on Montjuïc. Inside, whole apses of 11th- to 13th-century church frescoes are mounted in curved rooms, alongside Gothic altarpieces, Renaissance and baroque paintings, and modern Catalan work by Gaudí, Casas, and Dalí. Rooftop terraces open onto a long view down to Plaça d'Espanya.

More than 70 optical illusions and physics tricks spread over one floor beside Plaça Urquinaona, from a Zero Gravity room to a table that serves up your own head on a plate. Kids spend most of the 75-minute route photographing each other. Three birthday packs run alongside the standard visit, two of them with a private table for cake.

Spain's first video rental shop, open since 1980, holds 46,000 titles, around 7,000 of them for children. Behind the racks is a private 30-seat cinema you hire per session, with a 4K screen and Dolby Atmos, and popcorn and a soft drink included. Because the screening is private, kids can sing along. A cafe out front can be booked too for a snack or meal before or after the film.

The Fòrum's enclosed saltwater bathing zone sits right on the seafront esplanade, a stretch of sea penned off from the open water. The flat decking makes it easy to lay out towels. It is a few minutes from the L4 metro at El Maresme | Fòrum, and easy to fold into a day that takes in the adventure forest and playground on the same esplanade.

A cultural center set in the Casaramona textile factory, a 1911 Modernist landmark by Puig i Cadafalch, with a glass-and-steel entrance added by Arata Isozaki. Visitors ride escalators down to a lobby painted with a giant Sol LeWitt mural, then up to rotating art and history exhibitions. The CaixaForum Kids program runs workshops, concerts, and film screenings for children.

Mies van der Rohe built this pavilion for Germany at the 1929 International Exposition; it was demolished after the fair and rebuilt stone by stone in 1986. There are no rooms to queue through: kids roam freely between floating marble walls, spot the bronze statue in the small pool, and watch reflections shift across the water and green glass. A visit takes 20 to 30 minutes, and the Fundació runs occasional family workshops.

This palace has two different faces: a Gothic-style front crusted with gargoyles on Avinguda Diagonal and a curvy Modernista apartment block behind. Josep Puig i Cadafalch, the architect of Casa Amatller, rebuilt it in 1904 for the Baró de Quadras, and sculptor Eusebi Arnau packed the facade with dragons, knights, and improbable beasts that make a great spotting game. Now the Institut Ramon Llull's headquarters, it opens for 50-minute guided tours on Fridays.

A guided night visit inside the historic Fabra Observatory on Tibidabo, opened in 1904. Expert guides walk you through the modernist building and its museum rooms, give a short astronomy talk, then take you to the dome to look through one of Europe's oldest working telescopes at the moon, planets, and asteroids, with city views from outside the cupola.

The pailebote Santa Eulàlia is a restored 1918 schooner moored at the Moll de la Fusta in Port Vell, part of the Maritime Museum's collection. Visitors board to explore its design, period furnishings and rigging, and learn how sailors lived during long Mediterranean voyages. It is one of the oldest working sailing ships in the Mediterranean.

RCD Espanyol's grassroots football school, open to boys and girls with no entry trial. Players train two hours a week and play a league match on Saturday mornings, in small teams of up to 12 that slot into an internal league with promotion and relegation. Training is at the club's Ciutat Esportiva in Sant Adrià de Besòs, and membership comes with first-team tickets.

A small pedestrian square in front of the Gothic basilica of Santa Maria del Pi, shaded by a pine that has stood here for centuries. There are no swings, but the flat traffic-free paving lets toddlers run while parents sit at a café terrace, and most weekends an artisan food market fills the space. Pair it with the chocolate shops on nearby Carrer Petritxol.

El Planter is the youth branch of the Eòlia drama school, with weekly courses in theater, musical theater, acting, and singing grouped by age from 7 up. Sessions mix improvisation, scene work, voice, and movement, and each group rehearses toward a piece performed in front of an audience at the Teatre Eòlia. Classes run in Catalan and Spanish.

The city's municipal sailing school sits on the Port Olímpic marina, built for the 1992 Olympic sailing events. Kids learn dinghy sailing, windsurfing, kayaking, and paddleboarding from qualified instructors, working up through the small Laser Pico and RS Zest boats. Summer Campus Olímpia weeks rotate eight water activities plus snorkeling and English, and there are year-round courses and children's parties.

Wile E. Coyote has been flattened by ACME gadgets for decades, so he hires an unlucky lawyer and sues the company. It turns personal when the lawyer finds his old boss running ACME. Dave Green directs, putting the cartoon Coyote alongside Will Forte, John Cena and Lana Condor. The slapstick timing lands best in the original English, and parents raised on the Road Runner laugh as much as the kids.

The Halloween side of PortAventura Park is gentle for younger kids: Sesame Street shows, Truco o Trato (a walk-through with friendly ghosts that ends in candy), a soap-bubble show and an evening lake show with fire and fountains.

Admission covers the whole park and the haunted passages cost extra, so it works best as a full day.

Three city kids move to a run-down farm and find an enormous tree in the woods. At the top, a new magic land arrives every day, and Silky the fairy, Moon-Face and the Saucepan Man are waiting. Ben Gregor directs Enid Blyton's classic, with Andrew Garfield and Claire Foy as the parents and Nicola Coughlan as Silky. Parents who grew up on the books will enjoy it too.

Late October is harvest time in the towns inland from Barcelona. In the Montseny the fair is all about chestnuts, roasted over open fires, and guides lead walks through centuries-old groves. Out on the plains, farmers weigh their biggest pumpkins and kids paint small ones to take home.

Other towns retell their witch legends, with whole villages dressing up for puppets, street theater, music and fire.

Castaween is the Museu de la Xocolata's mix of the Castanyada and Halloween. In its family workshops, kids and parents work side by side, piping melted chocolate into spiderwebs, witch hats and pumpkin faces, or decorating butter cookies with ghosts and bats.

One workshop, Xoco Trencadís, adds a bit of Barcelona history: kids build a broken-tile mosaic, the style Gaudí made famous, out of colored chocolate.

For one weekend a year, buildings that are normally closed open their doors: 155 in Barcelona, plus more in five nearby towns. Volunteers run every door, and at some, the architect who designed the space shows you around. Kids get to walk into places they would never see otherwise.

It suits curious kids who can handle a short queue. Toddlers will find it a lot of walking.

Shopkeepers in neighborhoods all over Barcelona turn their streets into trick-or-treat routes for Halloween and the Castanyada. Kids in costume go from shop to shop, look for the sign in the window, and ask for candy.

The map shows every route found, each with its time. Some still show last year's times, since most shop associations post theirs in mid-October.

Els Llums de Sant Pau is a night walk through the Recinte Modernista de Sant Pau, a former hospital of tiled domes and red-brick pavilions, lit up for Christmas.

For 2026 the trail follows The Little Prince, with projections on the old stone, live characters, interactive stops, and an explorer's passport with hidden stamps for kids to collect. A small ice rink sits along the route.

Environmental Play at the Botanical Garden mixes open exploration with guided workshops and tours led by educators. Activities rotate weekly and include building wish trees, creating mandalas with seeds, discovering insects and birds, making paper flowers, planting seasonal flowers, weaving, and exploring specific plant species like dragon trees and eucalyptus.

Day of the Dead (Día de Muertos) is the Mexican holiday when families remember relatives who have died, with flower-covered altars, candles and sugar skulls. It is about memory, not a scary night.

The Mexican cultural association MEXCAT marks it here with a parade of catrinas, elegant skeleton ladies in big flowered hats, down La Rambla toward the sea. The painted faces are worth seeing up close.

Tibidabo, the old amusement park on the tallest hill over Barcelona, gets a full Christmas makeover each winter. A giant tree greets families at the entrance, the Merlí free-fall tower lights up as a Christmas star, and a skating rink with city views takes over the Plaça dels Somnis.

Santa visits before Christmas, and after New Year the Three Kings' royal pages arrive to collect children's letters.

A pessebre vivent is a living nativity scene: a whole village, or a patch of forest, turned into Bethlehem for a few winter evenings. Neighbors play shepherds, angels and Roman soldiers, lit by torches and lanterns.

Families walk from scene to scene in the dark, and for kids the walk is half the fun.

Every Christmas a big top goes up on the Moll de la Fusta, and the Raluys, a Catalan circus family, put on a new show. Think trapeze, aerial silks, acrobats flying off a seesaw, contortionists, a clown and live music, close enough to see the performers' faces.

There are no animal acts and very little talking, so it works for kids in any language.

An indoor trampoline park in Cornellà with wall-to-wall jump courts, a foam pit, and a battle-beam pit. Beyond trampolines there's the SkyRider overhead zipline, a Ninja Course, Clip 'N Climb walls, high ropes, a jump tower, and a younger KidsZone. Sessions run by the hour, and grippy socks are required. Changing rooms and free lockers are on site.

Founded in Gràcia in 1907, CE Europa runs the Escola CE Europa, a grassroots football school for boys and girls aged 4 to 14. It is a relaxed first step into the sport rather than a high-pressure academy. Children train twice a week in late-afternoon sessions at the Nou Sardenya stadium or the nearby l'Àliga pitch, then play internal matches at Nou Sardenya on Saturday mornings.

Climbat La Foixarda is a 2,000 m² municipal climbing center on the Montjuïc hillside, built into a converted old sports hall by the Foixarda tunnel. Kids climb roped routes, boulders, and auto-belays, and the climbing school runs as a weekly extraescolar: a children's track for ages 4 to 13 and a youth track to 18, grouped by age and ability.

The flooded forest recreates 1,000 square meters of Amazon rainforest, with live caimans, capybaras, and tropical birds, plus simulated rain every 15 minutes. Other halls hold a full T. rex skeleton, a wall of giant geological cross-sections, and a planetarium. Clik, Flash, and Touch Touch are hands-on rooms built for the youngest visitors.

Open since 1901, this mountaintop park stacks more than 30 rides up the side of Collserola. The signature Avió has swung kids out over the rooftops since 1928, and there is a hand-painted carousel, the Muntanya Russa rollercoaster, the Miramiralls hall of mirrors, and a small Automaton Museum. A separate Panoramic Area holds gentler rides for the youngest, and the Cuca de Llum funicular carries you up to the top.

A day pass to the Hotel Arts beachfront resort that lets non-guests use its outdoor pools without booking a room. The main freshwater pool has slides and a shallow children's section, with sunbeds and Balinese loungers around the terraces and gardens. The pass adds free parking and a food-and-drink credit to spend at the poolside Marina Coastal Food. A second pool is adults-only.

The second-largest wetland in Catalonia, with ponds, reed beds, and rice fields between the Muga and Fluvià rivers. Flat dirt tracks lead from the El Cortalet visitor center to seven bird hides and a tall observation tower, where over 300 species turn up, including white storks nesting on poles, fallow deer, and Camargue horses. Bring binoculars.

Beneath Plaça del Rei lies the largest underground excavation of Roman Barcino, over 4,000 square meters of 1st-to-7th-century streets, city wall, a laundry, a dyeing workshop, a fish-salting plant and a winery, crossed on raised walkways. The route then climbs into the medieval Saló del Tinell hall and Santa Àgata chapel of the old royal palace.

The city's grand iron market hall, built in 1876, was being turned into a library when workers found an entire block of 1700s Barcelona under the floor: streets, houses, shops and drains, left where they stood after the siege of 1714. The view over the excavation lands even with kids because it looks exactly like what it is, a buried little city. Santa Maria del Mar is three minutes away.

A hillside park that climbs in three zones: a flat lower section with playgrounds, formal historic gardens in the middle, and pine-and-holm-oak woodland at the top. Steep paths lead up to the Mitja Lluna lookout, whose panorama takes in the Sagrada Família, Torre Glòries and the sea, a free view many locals rate above nearby Park Güell. Wear sturdy shoes for the climb.

An open-air museum of 117 full-scale buildings copied from towns across Spain, laid out as a walkable village with squares, stepped streets, and a bell tower. Kids can watch glassblowers, potters, and other artisans at work in their workshops, follow a riddle-based scavenger hunt, and run between the plazas. The Fran Daurel art museum and a sculpture garden sit inside the walls.

The house next to Casa Batlló belonged to chocolate maker Antoni Amatller. Josep Puig i Cadafalch rebuilt it for him in 1898, topping it with a stepped gable and filling the doorway with carved animals pouring chocolate and taking photos. The main floor keeps its original furniture, audio-guided visits leave every 30 minutes, and the basement shop pours hot chocolate to the family recipe.

An independent cinema running since 1926, with five screens at Carrer de Verdi 32 plus four more at the Verdi Park annex round the corner on Carrer de Torrijos. Films play in their original language with subtitles. The Verdi Kids program puts on animated and family titles at morning sessions, with discounted tickets for children up to age 11.

Designed by Lluis Domenech i Montaner and built between 1902 and 1930, this UNESCO-listed site is the world's largest Art Nouveau complex: 12 restored pavilions covered in colored tile, sculpture, and stained glass, set among open gardens and linked by long underground tunnels kids can walk through. Self-guided routes pass mosaic murals, domed ceilings, and a scale model of the campus.

A Modernisme concert hall by Domènech i Montaner, crowned by an inverted stained-glass dome that makes it the only major European hall lit entirely by daylight. The 50-minute guided tour, offered daily in English, takes in the rehearsal room and the glass-wrapped main hall. The Palau also runs occasional family tours with a hands-on workshop and weekend Concerts en Família for children.

An early Antoni Gaudí mansion, built 1886 to 1888 for the Güell family. The tour runs from a brick-columned basement stable, where carriage horses were kept, up to a central hall topped by a dome pierced with small holes that let light fall like stars. The flat roof is set with cone chimneys covered in broken-tile mosaic.

Las Golondrinas has run harbor boat tours from the foot of the Columbus Monument since 1888. The 40-minute harbor tour loops around the port breakwater; the 90-minute coastal tour heads up to Port Olímpic via a glass-bottom boat with underwater views of the seabed. Boats depart from the Moll de les Drassanes jetty, a 4-minute walk from Drassanes metro.

A lookout on the seaward side of Montjuïc, just past the castle, where pine-wood paths zigzag up to balconies with a wide panorama over the port and open Mediterranean. There is a large picnic area with wooden tables under the pines, drinking fountains, and flat open ground for kids to run. La Caseta del Migdia, a small open-air bar with grilled food and summer live music, keeps irregular seasonal hours, so pack your own water and snacks.

Gaudí's first major building, finished in 1885 and now a house-museum across three floors and a small garden. Inside are the original tiled smoking room, dining room, and decorated ceilings; outside, green-and-white checkerboard tiles and marigold motifs cover the facade. Kids can climb to the rooftop terrace with its chimneys and walkways.

Patis Oberts opens school playgrounds to everyone outside class time, so the yard down the street becomes a neighborhood play space. A monitor opens the gate, watches over the space and gets kids playing together.

The 20 city nursery schools in the program set out sandboxes and toddler play areas for the under-sixes, and several host a storytime during the season.

The Sitges fantasy and horror film festival has made room for kids since 2023. At the Mercat Vell, the Sitges Family program shows films, cartoons and shorts picked for children and teens, with the audience on giant beanbags.

The other big draw is the Zombie Walk, a crowd in full zombie makeup shuffling through town. Free makeup stations turn kids into the undead earlier in the day.

Every autumn the old amusement park on top of Tibidabo dresses up for Halloween. The moment kids remember is nightfall, when a new zombie show called The Last Dance (L'Últim Ball) takes over the Plaça dels Somnis, with a dance number that nods to the King of Pop.

Between rides, younger kids can look for the park mascots Ti, Bi, Da and Bo in their Halloween outfits.

Brickània is Montblanc's LEGO festival, inside the medieval church of Sant Francesc and its cloister. Kids walk around eight big dioramas, from Harry Potter's world to a medieval Montblanc, and the apse holds three built around the town's Sant Jordi legend. Then they can build at the play area, join a short robotics session, or browse stalls of new and secondhand sets. It suits kids who already build at home.

Two neighboring festes majors end on the holiday, both with a family program. Sarrià starts with its homemade cart race down the old main street and closes with an outdoor movie and a cold-fire show. Les Corts fills the afternoon with a magician, the giants' farewell dance and a correfoc, then ends with fireworks set to music. Do a morning in one, an evening in the other.

A family Halloween spread through the streets of Poble Espanyol: 30 costumed characters, two walk-through tunnels, magician acts, games, a scavenger hunt and food trucks. Kids follow clues and solve riddles as they go, and costumes are welcome.

El Mago Pop's new show, "Nada es Imposible," is a large-scale illusion show with brand-new tricks and acts never seen on stage before, set to music and big theater staging. Over 3 million people have seen his shows in Barcelona, Madrid and on Broadway.

Barcelona's children's film festival screens around 100 international films across 21 showings, with a children's jury judging alongside adults. Workshops accompany select screenings, offering hands-on cinema experiences in a real festival setting.

Every Christmas the old harbor turns into a waterfront fair: wooden stalls and lights along Moll de la Fusta, a 65-meter Ferris wheel turning over the boats, and a synthetic ice rink.

What sets it apart from the city's other fairs is the sea. Historic ships open their decks, and younger kids head for the old-fashioned carousel and the Christmas train, with Santa waving from the front car.

For one weekend in mid-December, Cardedeu's old town fills with around 200 stalls. The star is the town's own nougat, torró de borrego, made from the crunchy anise biscuits that only Cardedeu's bakeries make.

At the heart of the fair burns the Foc de la Fira, a ring bonfire that stays lit all weekend and slowly cooks huge pots of escudella stew. Kids get a Caga Tió to beat.

Barcelona hangs lights over its main streets and squares each winter, and the big designer pieces change every year, so the walk looks different each time.

Kids usually stop longest at the moving pieces: the projection that turns City Hall into a giant Christmas card on Plaça de Sant Jaume, and the short light and music show on Gaudí's Casa Batlló.

Barcelona has no frozen ponds, so skating here means the rinks that pop up for Christmas. The biggest is the real-ice rink at Westfield La Maquinista, with a Christmas market and a giant slide next to it.

Some rinks are real ice and some are synthetic panels, which feel slower underfoot.

A water park and marine zoo in one, with around a dozen slides from gentle kids' chutes to the dark 12-meter Black Hole and the new six-slide Splash Tower, plus a wave pool and the Children's Paradise splash area for little ones. Daily shows feature dolphins and sea lions, and there's a butterfly garden, shop, and restaurants on site.

Illa Fantasia packs more than 22 rides and three big pools onto a hillside above the Maresme coast, from the near-vertical Xtreme Fall and the Race Track slide to a wave pool and a lazy river. Younger kids get their own Kids Zone, the Mini Tous mini slides and the new AquaFamily Kids water-play area. There are six food outlets, a picnic area with tables and barbecues, lockers, and on-site parking.

Gaudí designed this hillside park with a mosaic dragon fountain on the main staircase, a hall of tilted stone columns, and a long curving bench covered in broken-tile trencadís that looks out over the city to the sea. The paid Monumental Zone holds these landmarks; the surrounding woodland paths, lookouts, and a small playground are free to wander.

Aqualeón spreads down a wooded hillside near El Vendrell, about an hour southwest by car. A dozen slides drop through the trees alongside a wave pool, a rapid river, and a picnic area just outside the gates. The safari that once shared the site closed, so the park now runs on water rides alone.

Antoni Gaudí remodeled this Passeig de Gràcia townhouse between 1904 and 1906, and almost nothing inside is straight. The route climbs from the blue-tiled central light well to a noble floor of wavy stained-glass windows and a mushroom fireplace, then up to the rooftop terrace, whose scaled, dragon-back ridge and mosaic chimneys are the high point. A tablet guide animates each room.

A 1900 Neo-Mudéjar bullring rebuilt by architect Richard Rogers into a six-floor shopping center under the original brick ring. Kids can ride the escalators to the free 360° rooftop promenade for views over Plaça d'Espanya, the Magic Fountain and Montjuïc, play on the light-up floor in the central square, or catch a film at the 12-screen cinema.

Barcelona's biggest public market sits just off La Rambla under an iron-and-glass roof from 1914, with the stained-glass Sant Josep sign over the entrance. Stalls sell fruit, fish, jamón, cheese, and sweets, and small bar counters cook tapas to order. Kids gravitate to the rainbow fruit-cup and fresh-juice stands near the front.

Girona's walled old town climbs a hill above the Onyar river, where rows of houses painted ochre, red, and yellow line the water. Kids can walk the medieval ramparts on the Passeig de la Muralla, wind through the narrow lanes of the Jewish Call, and climb the 90 steps to the Cathedral, which has the widest Gothic nave in the world and stood in for King's Landing in Game of Thrones.

Built by Carles Buigas for the 1929 International Expo, the Font Màgica sits at the foot of the Palau Nacional, where Avinguda de la Reina Maria Cristina runs down to Plaça d'Espanya. After dark it runs a free water, light, and music show: around 2,600 liters a second move through three concentric pools, lit in shifting colors and set to music that ranges from film soundtracks to pop. Kids watch from the steps or the wide plaza below.

Joan Miró's own collection of paintings, sculptures, tapestries, and drawings fills the white Josep Lluís Sert building on Montjuïc, with skylit galleries built around courtyards. Kids gravitate to the big bright colors and odd bronze creatures, Calder's Mercury Fountain behind glass, and the rooftop sculpture terrace that looks out over the city.

Vic sits about an hour north of the city by car or R3 train. Its Plaça Major is one of the largest porticoed squares in Catalonia, ringed by arcaded medieval and Gothic facades, and fills with food, clothes, and craft stalls on Tuesday and Saturday mornings. Around it kids can see a standing Roman temple, the cathedral's tall Romanesque bell tower, and quiet stone lanes to explore on foot.

A protected limestone massif south of the city, between Castelldefels and Sitges, crossed by marked GR and PR trails through scrubland and Mediterranean fan palms. Families can walk shorter circular routes from the La Pleta information center in the Olivella valley, spot caves and rocky gullies, and reach ridge viewpoints over the coast.

Two sights sit across a valley about 90km northwest of the city. The Salt Mountain Cultural Park runs hour-long guided tours into a closed potash mine, descending to galleries 86 meters down where salt stalactites, folds, and red-streaked walls light up the tunnels. Opposite, Cardona Castle is a 9th-century hilltop fortress with the Romanesque church of Sant Vicenç inside.

A single-screen cinema in the former 1962 Cine Nápoles, with 415 seats, a giant screen, and a red retro lobby with a bar, vintage posters, and a British phone box. It runs 4K, Dolby Atmos, and 35mm/70mm prints, the only screen in Catalonia for 70mm. Films play in their original language with Spanish subtitles, and the lineup mixes classics, cult titles, and recent releases, including animated films that suit older kids.

A restored 1882 iron market that fills a whole Eixample block under a 28-meter octagonal dome. Inside are fresh-food stalls, a ring of clothing and bric-a-brac stands, and a basement section of the old Sant Antoni city wall. Every Sunday morning around a hundred stalls take over the perimeter selling secondhand books, comics, stickers, trading cards, postcards, and vintage video games.

A covered market on the site of Barcelona's oldest food hall, rebuilt in 2005 under a wavy roof tiled with 325,000 hexagonal ceramics in bright colors. Inside are around 100 stalls of fish, meat, fruit, and bread, plus a handful of tapas and restaurant counters where you can sit down to eat. It stays calmer and more local than La Boqueria.

Barcelona's natural science museum fills a tilted blue building by Herzog & de Meuron at the Fòrum. The Planeta Vida exhibition traces the history of life on Earth, and La Terra Avui displays around 4,500 specimens, from insects to large dissected mammals, minerals, and fossils. A free-access lobby holds the shop and the Niu de Ciència, a hands-on nature space for ages 0 to 6.

The youth academy of UE Sant Andreu, a club founded in 1909, runs more than 40 teams and over 600 boys and girls from age 5 through the cadet years. Training and matches are based at the Camp Municipal Narcís Sala on Carrer de Santa Coloma, with squads grouped by age from escoleta up to juvenil.

Mirador dels Xiprers is a peaceful viewpoint tucked into the southern edge of the Collserola hills, beneath Sant Pere Màrtir, framed by the cypress trees that give the spot its name. It is well off the tourist trail, busiest with joggers and families at weekends. There is no playground or kiosk: it is a place to walk, sit and take in the horizon, with room for kids to roam.

Concrete platforms on the 262-meter Turó de la Rovira, the remains of a 1937 anti-aircraft battery now run as a heritage site by the city history museum. They give a rare 360-degree view over the Sagrada Família, the port, the beaches and Tibidabo. Kids scramble on the low ruins, and bus 119 climbs almost to the top.

A huge paved seafront esplanade built for the 2004 Universal Forum, anchored by a tilted photovoltaic pergola the size of a football pitch raised on stilts. Kids come for the Bosc Urbà rope-and-zipline adventure forest, the enclosed saltwater Zona de Banys with step access for confident swimmers, and summer kayak and paddleboard sessions at the marina.

A wooded hilltop park in a quiet residential corner of the city, with gently ramped paths through shady Mediterranean woodland that stay walkable even with a stroller. Trails connect open squares with room to run, and stone steps climb to a mirador with a 360-degree panorama over Tibidabo, the Sagrada Família and the sea. A wood-themed playground sits among the gardens.

The 1992 Olympic stadium opens its visiting area to the public: the athletics track and field, the tiered stands, and the Marathon Gate framed by Pau Gargallo's two horse-rider sculptures. Ramón Bigas's tilted Olympic cauldron rises just outside. The surrounding Olympic Ring esplanade has fountains, sculptures, and wide-open space to run.

A working neighborhood food hall built in 1888, with a wrought-iron roof and modernist ornament by Francesc Berenguer, who worked alongside Gaudí. Inside are stalls for fresh fish, fruit and vegetables, meat, bread and dried fruit, plus a few market bars and a Bonpreu supermarket. Kids can watch fishmongers at work and pick out fruit between counters.

An 18th-century military fortress on the 173-meter Montjuïc hill, built in a star shape with angled bastions, a dry moat crossed by a stone bridge, and a watchtower. Kids can walk the ramparts, peer through gun embrasures at the rusted coastal cannons, and cross the drawbridge into the parade ground. The wraparound terrace gives a 360-degree view over the harbor, the sea, and the rooftops below.

The Font Màgica sits at the foot of Avinguda Maria Cristina below the Palau Nacional, built by Carles Buïgas for the 1929 International Exposition. Around 2,600 liters a second move through its three concentric pools, lit in color and choreographed to music: film scores, Spanish classical, rock, 1980s pop. The terraces and steps above the water fill up early.

The oldest surviving garden in the city, laid out from 1791 around a clipped-cypress hedge maze with a statue of Eros at its heart, ringed by fountains, terraces, temples and a romantic waterfall garden. It is calm and green, a half-day out for kids who like exploring. The maze itself is closed for restoration until early 2027, though the rest of the gardens stay open.

A pair of red cabins that glide 70 meters above the old harbor between the Barceloneta tower and Montjuïc, running since the 1929 International Exposition. The ten-minute crossing gives some of the best aerial views over the marina, the beaches and the sea. Cabins are standing-room only and hold 19, and with just two of them queues build quickly at weekends.

Gaudí's last apartment building has a self-supporting stone facade with no straight walls and twisting wrought-iron balconies. The visit climbs through two plant-filled inner courtyards to the Whale Attic, a hall of parabolic brick arches holding an exhibition on Gaudí's work, then out onto the rooftop terrace where sculpted chimneys and stair towers look like stone warriors. A restored 1900s flat shows how residents actually lived.

The museum fills the Drassanes Reials, the Gothic shipyards where medieval war galleys were built, and its centerpiece is a full-size replica of the 1571 Royal Galley, 60 meters of red hull and gilded stern under the stone arches. Around it sit ship models, figureheads, a wooden submarine replica in the garden, and the 1918 schooner Santa Eulàlia docked nearby at Moll de la Fusta.

Founded in 1899 and set around the Can Canet farmhouse, this private club runs 18 clay courts, the Pista Rafa Nadal stadium that hosts the Barcelona Open each April, a swimming pool, and a gym. Kids take group and private lessons in tennis and paddle tennis, the same courts where Rafael Nadal and Arantxa Sánchez Vicario trained.

Colorful groups called colles parade through Gran de Gràcia on horseback and decorated floats, throwing thousands of kilos of sweets to crowds armed with bags and buckets. The procession follows a morning pilgrimage to the Ermita de Sant Medir shrine in the Collserola mountains, returning in the evening for the main musical parade. Musicians, horses, and trucks fill the streets as riders toss caramels continuously.

A virtual-reality arcade with eight headset stations running over 60 Meta Quest 3 games, from zombie shooters and dancing to ocean exploration. Groups of two to eight play together in the same session, and there is a multiplayer VR escape room as an alternative. Staff set up the headsets and adjust each game to the players' age and experience.

The family strand of the city's public film archive screens a film every Saturday and Sunday at 5pm in a proper air-conditioned cinema. The program changes quarterly around a theme, with recent cycles on Studio Ghibli and Japanese animation alongside classics. Films run in their original version with Catalan or Spanish subtitles rather than English dubbing, which suits animation well.

At the chocolate museum in El Born, the family workshop puts a piping bag in your child's hands: kids melt, pipe and mold chocolate into lollipops or bars and decorate them before tasting the results. A short, kid-friendly explanation of how chocolate is made opens each hour-long session. Every ticket also includes museum entry, home to chocolate sculptures and the edible chocolate-bar admission ticket.

Gaudí's still-unfinished basilica, started in 1882 and topping out at over 170 meters. Inside, branching stone columns rise like a forest while morning and afternoon sun pours through walls of red, blue, and green stained glass. The audio guide has a kids' track, the carved Nativity and Passion façades work like a picture book, and a lift carries visitors up one of the towers.

An indoor karting center with a 500m asphalt track that runs through tunnels, chicanes and banked corners. Small kids ride electric mini-karts on a separate Monaco-themed track, and teens can drive the faster adult karts, which makes it one of the few places a whole family can race together. There is a burger-and-pizza restaurant in the building.

A theme park in Salou, about an hour south by car or train, split into six themed worlds: Mediterrània, Far West, México, China, Polynesia, and SésamoAventura for younger kids. Rides range from the Tami-Tami kiddie coaster and the Sesame Street zone to the big drops on Dragon Khan and Shambhala. The neighboring Caribe Aquatic Park, with slides and a wave pool, needs a separate ticket.

A full-size 30x60m ice rink at the FC Barcelona sports complex in Les Corts, with the club crest painted at center ice and tiered seating along one side. Public sessions let anyone lace up and circle the ice. Birthday parties include rink entry, skate hire and breakfast or an afternoon snack in a reserved area of the rink bar, with prices quoted on request.

Tossa de Mar sits about 100km up the Costa Brava, roughly a 90-minute drive north. The headland is wrapped by the Vila Vella, the only fully walled medieval old town left on the Catalan coast, with stone towers and a lighthouse you can walk up to. Below it, Platja Gran is a 380m sheltered sand beach, and quieter Mar Menuda rents kayaks and snorkel gear.

A Benedictine monastery built into a serrated rock mountain about 50km northwest of the city, reached by rack railway or cable car from the R5 train line. The basilica holds La Moreneta, the Black Madonna statue, and the Escolania boys' choir sings here most days. Two short funiculars run from the monastery: one climbs to ridge-top trails and viewpoints, the other drops to the Santa Cova cave chapel.

Parc de la Ciutadella covers 17 hectares of flat, shaded paths around a rowing-boat lake. Kids can climb the life-size stone mammoth, explore the monumental Cascada fountain (a young Gaudí helped design it), and visit the Castell dels Tres Dragons. Several playgrounds are dotted through the grounds, and Barcelona Zoo occupies the southern half. Open daily, 7am to dusk.

An aerial cable car that climbs 750 meters up Montjuïc to the medieval castle at the top. The eight-person glass cabins give a slow, smooth ride with a constantly changing view over the port, the Sagrada Família and the sea. A return ticket lets you hop off at the castle to walk the ramparts and gardens, then ride back down the same day.

A Les Corts fixture since 1978, with 14 automatic lanes set against a brick mural of the skyline and a lighter crowd than the Diagonal Mar alley. Bumpers cover children up to 14 and ramps help younger kids who cannot yet swing a ball get it down the lane. Lanes are first come, first served, with a bar-restaurant on site. Birthday parties for kids 8 to 14 are booked ahead and include bowling, a meal and cake.

The Picornell pools sit in Montjuïc's Olympic Ring and hosted the 1992 Olympic swimming and water polo finals. The complex has two 50m pools, one open-air and one indoor, plus a separate diving pool. Non-members can buy a single entry to the open-air pools from April to October, with cheaper tickets for kids, and sales stop when the pool reaches capacity.

A municipal indoor swimming center on the Escola Industrial grounds, built in 1966 as the first covered Olympic-size pool in Spain. The 10-lane, 50-meter pool sits under a tall window wall, and the center runs swim school courses for kids from age 3, plus diving and artistic swimming groups. A gym and wellness area round out the building.

While Spotify Camp Nou is rebuilt, the FC Barcelona museum sits in a 2,400 m2 space next to the stadium. Kids walk a goal-replay tunnel, see Messi's Ballons d'Or and Golden Boots, browse trophy galleries, then enter Camp Nou Live, a 360-degree screen room that drops you into the middle of the pitch. A model shows the new stadium taking shape.

Torre Glòries is the city's third-tallest building. The visit starts underground in an interactive museum and a floating art installation, then goes up by elevator to the 30th-floor lookout, with views from the Mediterranean to the Sagrada Família to Montjuïc. Thanks to the tower's circular shape, the panorama is uninterrupted. A digital audio guide in 10 languages helps keep kids engaged. The Cloud Cities walk-through artwork has physical requirements.

One of the city's oldest sports clubs, founded in 1902 on the hill behind Park Güell, with 16 clay tennis courts plus padel, a pool and a gym. The draw is the tennis school: the Kids program starts at age 3 through play and psychomotor games, then progresses through Initiation, Pre-competition and Competition levels grouped by age. There is also a summer campus.

A Michael Jackson tribute concert. Impersonator SacMjj recreates his best-known choreographies while Dabeat sings the hits live. It suits kids who like to get up and dance, and parents who grew up on Thriller often enjoy it as much as the kids do.

A century-old swim club on Sant Sebastià beach with direct access to the sand, plus a dedicated learn-to-swim pool. The pools are also listed as Piscina Sant Sebastià; it is the same place. Beyond the water there are padel courts, a gym, a spa, a poolside restaurant and a summer sports camp.

A 50-minute train ride south of the city reaches a small seaside town with 17 sandy beaches strung along a 4km promenade. Breakwaters keep the water calm and shallow, several beaches have lifeguards and pedalo hire, and the flat old quarter behind the seafront has ice-cream shops, a hilltop church, and easy streets for strollers.

A small Maresme town with two sandy beaches, Platja de la Riera and Els Tres Micos, both Blue Flag rated and backed by a flat seafront promenade good for scooters and strollers. The R1 station sits a few minutes from the sand. The center holds the only publicly owned thermal baths in Catalonia, with spring water at around 39C.

A wide stretch of sand running about 400 meters along the Passeig Marítim promenade, with the W Hotel sail at one end and the Port Olímpic towers at the other. There are lifeguards and showers in summer, sun loungers and chiringuito snack bars to rent from, volleyball nets, and an outdoor gym. Calm shallows make it easy for kids to paddle.

Club Natació Catalunya, founded in 1931, sits on the hillside just above Parc Güell. The heated 25 m outdoor pool stays open all year, covered with thermal blankets in winter, alongside an indoor lap pool, a teaching pool, a warm baby pool, padel, squash and frontón courts, a gym, and a sauna. Most activities require membership or course enrollment.

A 415-meter stretch running from Port Olímpic to the Bogatell breakwater, and one of the calmer central beaches. A rope-pyramid climbing frame and a ping-pong table sit by the Bogatell end, with two sand volleyball courts near the harbor. Buoy-marked swimming zones, lifeguard towers, adapted showers, lockers, and kiosks line the promenade.

Castelldefels runs for nearly 5 kilometers of wide, flat golden sand about 18 km south of the city, reaching 90 meters across at its widest. The sea stays shallow a long way out, and the steady afternoon breeze feeds sailing, windsurfing, kitesurfing and paddleboard schools along the promenade. Kids find playgrounds, sports courts, chiringuitos and a summer tourist train, with lifeguards on the main bathing zones from June to September.

Bogatell is a 702-meter Blue Flag beach between Nova Icària and Mar Bella, rebuilt as part of the 1992 Olympic seafront redevelopment. Wide, flat sand makes it easy for strollers and toddlers; the sea entry is shallow and gentle. Facilities include a children's play area, beach volleyball and football, two ping-pong tables, showers, adapted toilets, and a supervised assisted-bathing service for visitors with reduced mobility. Lifeguards cover the main bathing season daily from 10:30 to 19:30.

A members aquatics club founded in 1931, spread across two Sants and Les Corts sites with a 50m outdoor pool, two 25m pools, two 12.5m teaching pools, a fitness room, and a spa. Kids learn through baby swimming, graded swim courses from age 6, and artistic (synchronized) swimming, alongside water polo, athletics, triathlon, karate, squash, and table tennis.

A 522-meter stretch of sand at the east end of Barceloneta, running from the Espigó del Gas breakwater to the Olympic Port marina. There's a children's play area, volleyball courts, and a fitness zone on the sand, plus lifeguard towers, showers, and toilets. Wooden walkways and adapted showers reach the waterline. The Beach Centre sits under the arcade by the Hospital del Mar.

Barcelona's easternmost and newest beach, opened in 2006, stretching about 375 meters of wide sand at the far end of the seafront below Diagonal Mar. It has lifeguard towers, showers, public toilets, and wooden walkways out toward the water, plus a beach volleyball court at the western end. A fenced dog-bathing area runs along the northern stretch through the summer.

A 420-meter stretch of sand between Sant Sebastià and Barceloneta beaches, named after the 1755 church of Sant Miquel del Port. The shallow, gently shelving entry suits younger swimmers, and lifeguards watch the water in summer. Showers, adapted toilets, and wooden walkways run down to the waterline, with ice-cream kiosks and paddle-surf rentals along the promenade.

The westernmost of Barcelona's city beaches, at the quieter end of Barceloneta below the W Hotel. The sand runs about 660 meters with a sheltered, breakwater-calmed stretch good for younger swimmers, plus a beachside climbing frame and play area, lifeguard towers, showers, public toilets, and kiosks. Deckchairs and parasols are available to hire.

Mar Bella is one of Barcelona's eastern beaches, just past Bogatell: a wide stretch of golden sand with a gentle slope into the water and a promenade running behind it. The municipal Base Nàutica rents kayaks and stand-up paddleboards and runs sailing and windsurfing courses. In the summer bathing season there are lifeguards, showers, an accessible bathing point and chiringuito beach bars.

The Castanyera is the chestnut seller who turns up in Catalonia every autumn. For this workshop she has filled La Pedrera with autumn objects, and kids solve challenges in the building's best-known spaces to find them, seeing Gaudí's house up close along the way.

It runs in Catalan, so it suits kids who follow Catalan at school and gives them a nice chance to use it somewhere new.

Two street clowns arrive with a life raft, ready for the great flood. While they wait, their opposite personalities, fears and grief surface, alongside friendship and a lot of physical comedy. Nobody speaks, so it needs no Catalan or English. The show won Best Premiere at Fira Tàrrega in 2025.

Joan's parents have an unusual worry: their son has never been scared of anything. So they book a weekend in a haunted house, hoping the ghosts, monsters and curses will finally teach him what fear feels like.

What follows is a comic musical in Catalan from La Roda Produccions, full of songs, dance numbers and spooky characters who can't quite rattle him. The scares are played for laughs.

This is a concert, not a ballet. An orchestra plays the best-known parts of Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker while a narrator tells the story, and a sand artist draws it live on a table, projected on a big screen.

The room is half the show. The Palau de la Música is covered in colored glass and mosaics, and kids spend as much time looking up at the ceiling as at the stage.

A live escape room set in a moody, early-1900s mansion: a young heiress has been murdered and her spirit is trapped inside, and your team has 60 minutes to crack the puzzles and set her free. It takes large parties, up to about 21 players at once, and runs in Catalan, Spanish, English and French, so non-Spanish-speaking families can play in their own language.

A drop-in learning space with reference books, games and experimental materials for discovering architecture. An educator helps kids explore, play and learn with hands-on resources. It's part of the program for Barcelona 2026 World Capital of Architecture.

Món Sant Benet is a medieval monastery in the Bages countryside. Its Castanyada story is about an old chestnut seller who put a spell on her recipe book, so the ingredients now read like troll nails, giant dandruff and bat blood.

Kids follow the clues to decode the recipe, then turn it into a panellet, the small almond sweet of the season. It is spooky in a silly way.

Vila Màgica is Gràcia's own magic festival, now in its third year and run by neighborhood associations. For families, the heart of it is the open-air stage in Plaça Joanic: a comedy magician, rows of folding chairs and a crowd of kids. The acts are built on humor and audience participation, so expect volunteers to be called up. Indoor shows around the neighborhood fill out the rest of the program.

Civic centers, libraries and neighborhood casals all over Barcelona throw small parties for the Castanyada, and many mix in a little Halloween too. Think roasted chestnuts, the Castanyera in her headscarf telling stories, puppet shows and face painting.

These are the neighborhood's own parties, small and friendly. Kids roll panellets, walk through a homemade spooky tunnel, or just eat warm chestnuts with friends.

Barcelona's Holy Week features kid-focused traditions including the Mona de Pasqua (elaborate chocolate cakes gifted by godparents), L'Ou com Balla (eggs balanced on fountain jets at the Cathedral and Casa de l'Ardiaca), La Burreta (a child-scale Palm Sunday procession through the Gothic Quarter), the Sagrada Família Passion light show, and Easter egg hunts and workshops at Parc de la Ciutadella and Poble Espanyol.

Alella Green Tech runs this on its Can Picard farm. The patch sits on an open hillside, so kids walk out among the vines, pick a pumpkin, cut it themselves and carve it at the long wooden tables.

Party days are the big version, with the whole hillside busy. On quiet days the patch opens just for picking and carving.

Every Christmas, Poble Espanyol, the open-air village on Montjuïc, turns into Natalis. Thousands of lights go up, and the lanes split into themed worlds: an elves' workshop, a candy land run by a pastry chef, a wizard's corner full of riddles, and a street of Christmas traditions from around the world.

Kids meet characters, watch roaming shows, make crafts and hand over a letter to Santa or the Three Kings.

Twelve themed rooms run kids through a ball-pit pool styled as liquorice, an inflatable marshmallow castle called Fluffy Dreams, an ice-cream forest, oversized gummy figures, a walk-in bubble-gum machine, and a pink hide-and-seek maze. Most visits take 60 to 90 minutes, and the route ends at a café and shop selling Parallelo gelato and Onyva coffee, free to enter without a ticket.

At the heart of this large park is La Balena, a pair of giant whale-shaped structures kids climb by rope net, slide down and crawl inside, where younger ones find a boat, spinning wooden fish and a moving fin. Around it sit balance logs, two trampolines and a zip line, with several more playgrounds, two lakes and a palm grove nearby. A water-play fountain runs in summer.

Set in the 14th-century former Convent de Sant Agustí, the collection is built around sculptures made entirely of chocolate: the Sagrada Família, Sant Jordi and the dragon, and cartoon characters that change through the year. Panels trace cocoa from bean to bar, and the cafe and obrador run hands-on workshops and tastings.

Barcelona's fire service runs this museum and prevention center inside the Montjuïc fire station, a short walk from Plaça d'Espanya. Five sections walk kids through the vehicles, the station, the call center, the firefighters and their gear, from brass helmets up. It is one of the cheapest indoor plans in the city.

A refurbished play area behind the Museu Blau, built from tall wood-and-steel towers that read like a cross between a castle and a rocket. The centerpiece links them by bridges and stairs, with a long spiral stainless-steel tube slide and a steel climbing pyramid, alongside separate zones for younger children. It sits right by the sea, so there is almost always a breeze.

La Casa dels Entremesos fills the old Palau Mercaders with Barcelona's festival imagery: the giants, capgrossos, and bestiary that parade through Ciutat Vella during festes majors live here between outings. Kids can walk right up to the figures, catch a roughly monthly Saturday-morning puppet show, or join the theatrical tour of the giants held the first Sunday of each month.

The International Museum of Puppets of Catalonia (MIT) holds over 800 puppets from the 18th to 21st centuries: Catalan company puppets, shadow puppets, and puppets used in therapy and education. The guided family visit covers the manipulation techniques and the stories behind the pieces, then kids handle real puppets in an interactive room. Each visit ends with a live magic-and-puppet show.

The flagship El Corte Inglés fills a whole side of Plaça de Catalunya across nine floors, with a children's department for clothes and toys, a basement gourmet supermarket, and a top-floor food hall, La Plaça Gastro Mercat. Stalls there serve paella, sushi, pizza, and ice cream, and the dining room and outdoor terrace look out over the plaza toward the Sagrada Família and Tibidabo.

The flagship department store at the top of the Diagonal, and one of the most useful rainy-day or heatwave fallbacks in the area: a whole floor of children's clothing, shoes and toys, family bathrooms and strong air conditioning. The rooftop Gourmet Experience is a food court with a terrace and open views toward Tibidabo, an easy place to feed everyone without a reservation.

Maremagnum sits on its own island in Port Vell, reached by the Rambla de Mar wooden swing bridge from the Columbus Monument. Two floors of shops and a food court wrap around an indoor atrium, with a free children's play area, an information point, and a first-aid room. Waterside terraces look out over the marina, and L'Aquarium is next door.

One of the city's largest malls, right by the sea near the Fòrum, with more than 200 shops and the Ilusiona bowling and arcade complex, all fully air-conditioned. The standout for families is Un Mar de Jocs, a free supervised play room with Montessori-style sea-themed activities, plus the open-air Terrassa del Mar with a nautical play park and the lighthouse-shaped El Far climbing structure.

Westfield Glòries sits beside Torre Glòries (the old Agbar tower), a redesign by Javier Mariscal who scattered bright kinetic sculptures across its car-free plazas. More than 100 shops, a Carrefour and an El Mercat food court ring the pedestrian squares, which have trees, benches and water features. A VOSE cinema screens original-version films, and Glòries metro (L1) is a five-minute walk.

A big shopping center by Rafael Moneo, designed as a 'skyscraper lying on its side' that runs more than 300 meters along the Diagonal with over 170 shops. For families it is a reliable rainy-day or heat-escape outing: fully air-conditioned and stroller-friendly, with children's and maternity stores, a large Decathlon and a food court. The free Sant Joan de Déu playground sits right next door.

An open-air shopping center in Sant Andreu with over 200 shops spread across three levels of walkways, planted terraces, and fountains. Kids get a 13-screen Cine Yelmo, fast-food and sit-down restaurants, and a driving-simulator arcade, while the air-conditioned stores make it a cool stop on a hot afternoon. Parking is free.

Masia Vilanoveta, a country house just outside Sitges, turns its grounds into a pumpkin field each fall. Kids walk the rows looking for the one that feels like theirs, then paint and decorate it at the craft tables.

It feels more like a village autumn fair than a ticketed attraction, with food, stalls, a stage, games and bouncy castles. Plan a slow afternoon, not a quick stop.

Kids in costume go from shop to shop through Barceloneta asking for candy, handed out by the storekeepers themselves. The shopkeepers' association puts it on with the neighborhood's school parent groups and local festival committee.

Every fall, roasted chestnut stands pop up on street corners all over Barcelona. A warm paper cone of chestnuts, or a roasted sweet potato, on the walk home is the easiest way to do the Castanyada with kids.

The pins show the 2025 stands, because the 2026 list is not out yet. The city usually posts it in late October, and most stands return to the same corner.

Winterland turns Casa Balcells, a century-old country estate in La Garriga, into a Christmas world you walk through in stages: Santa's house with its toy factory and candy kitchen, a themed garden, the Three Kings' kingdom and an enchanted forest, with actors in character all along the way.

For kids who believe, the big draw is meeting both Santa and the Three Kings in one visit.

In Spain, the new year starts with 12 grapes, one for each chime of the clock at midnight. Midnight is late for small kids, so several spots around the city hold kids' countdowns at noon instead.

These midday parties bring music, dancing and a big countdown, with grapes or other treats handed around. Kids feel part of the biggest night of the year and are still in bed on time.

Barcelona's Carnival runs across all districts with neighborhood parades led by Rei Carnestoltes, the mischievous carnival king. The main event is La Gran Rua de Carnaval, featuring floats, costumes, and live music. Schools organize costume days, and parades are family-paced with activities designed for children.

In the days before January 5, the Three Kings send their royal pages, the patges reials, to collect children's letters.

At the Railway Museum of Catalonia, a royal page sets up among real steam locomotives in an old engine shed, so the letter drop comes with a morning of exploring historic trains. There is also a virtual reality ride inside a vintage Talgo train.

Since 1877, Barcelona families have come here to shop for Reis, the Three Kings' day. Two long rows of stalls line Gran Via, selling toys, sweets, decorations and small gifts.

For kids it is a chance to pick out a little something of their own. Look for carbó, black sugar candy made to look like coal, and for stalls frying fresh xurros to dunk in thick hot chocolate.

Every Christmas the Port Olímpic marina turns its waterfront into a winter play zone, with a handmade theme of paper, light and the sea. A 12-meter tree with paper ornaments lights up the dock, and the play area fills with giant games, wooden blocks and origami.

After dark, a short 3D projection tells the story of a sailor cat hunting for Christmas decorations across the city.

The Tió, or Caga Tió, is the Catalan Christmas log, with a painted smiling face, a red barretina hat and a blanket to keep it warm.

Tió fairs fill a village square with stalls full of logs of every size, workshops to decorate your own, and in some villages a hunt through the woods to find one to take home.

At Christmas the Zoo adds a festive layer to a day with the animals: a 12-meter fir tree by the Lady with the Umbrella fountain and winter photo spots along the paths.

The program leans on Catalan traditions. La Casa dels Tions shows how the Tió looks after the forest, families can join a group Caga Tió, and a scavenger hunt sends kids around the zoo with wildlife clues.

Every Christmas the garden around Torre Lluc, an old country house in Gavà, fills with a walk-through world of lights. In 2025 it was the Jardí dels Somnis, the Garden of Dreams, with fairy-tale sets, interactive installations and Gavà's storybook heralds pulling kids into games.

For 2026 the town has announced a new set inspired by its old enchanted forest.

The whole city turns out to welcome the Three Kings. Melcior, Gaspar and Baltasar sail into the old port, then ride across the center on giant lit-up floats with dancers, stilt walkers, live music and a crowd of patges, their royal helpers.

Kids catch the candy thrown from the floats, wave at their favorite king and look out for Page Estel with her star.

Around Christmas, Barcelona fills with pessebres, the Catalan nativity scenes: whole miniature villages of moss, rivers, mills and shepherds built around the manger. City Hall, the Cathedral, markets and neighborhood clubs each build one.

The game every local kid knows is spotting the caganer, a little squatting figure hidden in almost every one. In the Cathedral cloister, kids also count the 13 white geese that live there.

Around Christmas, Plaça de Catalunya becomes an open-air theater under a huge glowing stage set, with street theater, circus, dance and music.

Mornings are made for families: short visual-theater and object shows with little talking, repeated several times so there is always one about to start. Afternoons bring acrobats and jugglers.

Port Vell's aquarium holds 11,000 animals from 450 species across 35 tanks. The centerpiece is an 80-meter glass tunnel that runs through the Oceanarium, where sandbar and sand tiger sharks, rays, and a giant sunfish swim overhead. The Explora! zone adds 50-plus hands-on stations and touch pools with starfish, sea urchins, and crabs.

Barcelona's newest big park, opened in 2025 on the once traffic-choked Plaça de les Glòries, linking the Eixample, Poblenou and Sant Martí under the Torre Glòries. The tall metal slides of its play area are built into the old Olympic traffic ring. There are also ping-pong tables, basketball hoops and a hectare of open lawn for picnics and running.

The social heart of Gràcia: a wide, traffic-free square under a 33-meter clock tower that is the district's symbol. It is a square rather than a dedicated playground, but the car-free paving lets little ones run, scoot and kick a ball while parents watch from a café terrace. Dedicated climbing-frame playgrounds sit a short walk away in Plaça del Sol and Plaça d'en Joanic.

Tucked behind Barcelona's City Hall, Plaça de Sant Miquel is one of the quietest squares in the old city. Its playground has in-ground trampolines set right at the base of Antoni Llena's 26.5-meter Homenatge als Castellers, a stainless-steel tower shaped like the wire cage over a cava cork. The square is car-free, with a couple of bars for a coffee while kids play.

Barcelona's second-largest park spreads 14 hectares around a big lake, with looping steel tubes that hold mosaic plant pots and spray a fine mist over the water. The headline draw for kids is the Muntanya Màgica, a hill of wide stainless-steel slides you ride two at a time, plus two playgrounds, a skate area, and basketball courts. Paths run all the way down to the beach.

Five hectares of Mediterranean woodland climb a 178-meter hill to a mirador overlooking the city, sea, Sagrada Família and Tibidabo. Two play areas sit below: a large metal tunnel-and-slide on sand for older kids, and gentler wooden swings and a see-saw for toddlers. Petanque courts, ping-pong tables, outdoor gym equipment and off-leash dog areas round it out.

Built into a former quarry up in El Coll, this park wraps around a wide crescent pool with Eduardo Chillida's giant suspended concrete sculpture, Elogi de l'aigua, hanging on cables above the water. In summer the pool opens for bathing, with palm trees and a sandy edge. The rest of the year it is a calm spot with wide, uncrowded city views.

A large neighborhood square on the edge of the Raval, reorganized in 2017 around a children's play area with two zones: gentler equipment for under-5s and a more challenging structure for older kids. Beyond the playground there is a basketball court, petanque courts and plenty of benches for parents. The paved areas catch full sun, so mornings are the most comfortable time to visit.

Grand public gardens hidden behind a wall of bougainvillea on the Diagonal, laid out around an early-20th-century royal palace with lawns, fountains and an oval pool. Wide gravel paths and shady pines give little ones room to run, and there is a playground inside. The hidden highlight is the Font d'Hèrcules, a dragon-spout fountain designed by a young Gaudí.

A big, sunny park at the top of Avinguda Diagonal, best known for its Roserar, a rose garden of more than 10,000 bushes and over 250 varieties that peaks in color and scent from May to July. Beyond the roses there are wide lawns for picnics and ball games, a large children's play area with a zip line, ping-pong tables and a fountain. It sits a little out from the center near Zona Universitària, which keeps it calm and local.

A wild, wooded 17-hectare park in the Collserola foothills above Sarrià, far quieter than the city-center green spaces. The big draw for kids is the miniature railway, run by volunteers, looping 635 meters past its own little station, through tunnels, over bridges and a viaduct. There are also the ruins of an old castle and sweeping views to the sea.

A 14-hectare modern park near the Fòrum, threaded by a snaking steel structure that carries water to the gardens, with a central lake and trencadís-mosaic planters. Its signature feature is a set of giant slides built into a grassy hill, wide enough for a parent and child to ride together, plus two playgrounds, football, basketball and a skating area.

A 5.5-hectare park by architect Jean Nouvel, built around the theme of shade, with roughly 1,000 Mediterranean trees, palms and bougainvillea-draped perimeter walls. For families the appeal is space and variety: several play areas dotted through the park, plus pétanque courts, table-tennis, basketball hoops and wide paths that are great for scooters and bikes. On-site facilities are limited, so bring water.

A large park beside Barcelona-Sants station, built on a former textile mill, with an artificial lake ringed by nine white lighthouse towers and terraced steps. The headline for kids is El Drac, a 32-meter steel dragon by Andrés Nagel that doubles as a slide: children climb onto its back and shoot out of its mouth. A separate fenced playground serves younger ones, with open plazas for scooters.

Josep Vilaseca built this red-brick arch as the grand entrance to the 1888 Universal Exposition, decorating it with ceramic crowns, carved friezes, and a squadron of stone bats. It presides over Passeig de Lluís Companys, a wide car-free promenade lined with palm trees where kids scoot and bike past giant-bubble makers and street musicians, and it dead-ends into Parc de la Ciutadella, so it slots naturally into a park morning.
